Who is the Earth, Wind & Fire drummer in the hospital right now. That’s John Paris, 58, the band’s longtime drummer, who remains sedated after a cardiac emergency struck backstage on Aug. 6, just hours before Earth, Wind & Fire was set to perform with Lionel Richie at San Francisco’s Chase Center. The Drummer briefly opened his eyes and asked for his wife before doctors put him back under to stabilize his breathing and blood pressure.

What actually happened the night of the concert?

The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed crews responded to Chase Center around 5:30 p.m. for a medical emergency, and one person was taken to a hospital by private ambulance. The show, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., never happened. Staff turned concertgoers away at the door with almost no notice. Doctors placed Paris into an induced coma once he arrived at the hospital so they could deliver the critical care he needed.

Who has been by his side this whole time?

His wife, Kathy Merrick, and their daughter, Kyla, haven’t left. Neither has Eddie Mininfield, known to fans as Eddie M, a saxophonist who has played alongside Paris for years in the duo Back 2 Basics. That friendship matters here. When Paris briefly came to, he didn’t just ask for his wife, he also turned to Mininfield with a flash of the same humor people who know him describe, telling him to get him out of there. It’s a small moment, but it’s the kind of detail that tells you who someone is even in a hospital bed.

Why did his condition take a turn again so fast?

The relief in that room didn’t last long. Not long after Paris regained consciousness, his blood pressure spiked and he started struggling to breathe. His medical team made the call to sedate him again, a decision aimed at giving his body room to stabilize rather than push through complications that could get worse. Family spokesperson Shelly Clark White, married to bandmate Verdine White, has said Paris still shows slight responses when music plays at his bedside, something that carries extra weight given a man who has spent nearly four decades behind a drum kit.

How long has this drummer actually been part of Earth Wind and Fire?

Paris joined in 2001, well after the group’s founding in 1969, but he’s been on the road ever since, playing on The Promise, Illumination, Now, Then & Forever and Holiday. Outside of Earth, Wind & Fire, he has worked with Sheila E, Stephanie Mills, Patti LaBelle and Kelly Clarkson, a resume that explains why musicians across genres are among those donating to the GoFundMe set up for his family.

What’s happening with the postponed tour dates?

Chase Center has already rescheduled the San Francisco show for Sept. 26, and ticket holders can either hold onto their original tickets or request a refund. Earth, Wind & Fire pushed forward with the rest of the tour, performing days later in Palm Desert, though the band has not released its own separate statement on Paris’ condition beyond what’s shared on the family run Facebook page. Notably, Richie himself dealt with a dizzy spell that forced a postponed show earlier in the run, a detail that’s added to concern among fans following the tour closely.

What comes next for the family?

Nobody close to this situation is promising a timeline. Shelly Clark White has said his road ahead is far from over, and the family’s updates read like people managing hope and hard reality at the same time. The GoFundMe has raised close to $69,000 toward a $75,000 goal, money the family says will help cover the cost of care while Kathy stays at his side instead of at work.
