Jay-Z has finally answered the Coldplay complaint Kanye West put on wax almost two decades ago. On the seventh episode of his docuseries JAŸ-Z in 8, the 56-year-old told producer Rick Rubin that West’s 2007 song Big Brother made it sound like he had betrayed West by recording with Chris Martin. Jay’s side is simple. Martin was already his friend, and he was the one who introduced Martin to West in the first place. He called West’s reaction partly a case of entitlement and said no artist gets to treat another artist like private property.
That is the headline. The part nobody is talking about is the calendar.
What did Kanye West say about Jay-Z and Coldplay?
On Big Brother, from his album Graduation, West describes telling Jay about his Coldplay record, then watching Jay land a Coldplay record of his own soon after. He also admits he took his frustration to Jay Brown, the Roc-A-Fella A&R who later helped found Roc Nation, instead of going to Jay directly. West concedes in the song that going around his mentor only made things worse.
West’s collaboration with Martin was Homecoming, released in 2007. Jay teamed with Martin on Beach Chair from his 2006 album Kingdom Come, then joined Coldplay on Lost+ in 2008.
Does the Jay-Z and Kanye West Coldplay timeline add up?
Here is the twist. By release date, Jay’s Coldplay song reached the public first. Kingdom Come arrived in November 2006. Graduation, which carried both Homecoming and Big Brother, came out in September 2007.
That does not prove West wrong. His lyric is about who recorded first and who spoke up first, and studio timelines rarely match release dates. What it does show is that the popular reading of the song, with West as the pioneer and Jay as the copycat, never lined up with what fans could buy in stores. Jay pointed to that same perception in the episode, noting that listeners heard the lyric and assumed he had moved foul.
Add Jay’s claim that he made the introduction, and the story flips again. The connection West felt protective of started with Jay.
Why is Jay-Z talking about this now?
The series is built for moments like this. JAŸ-Z in 8 puts Jay in long conversations with Rubin about his life and career, and this episode focused on betrayal. Jay said he could put himself in West’s shoes, but understanding a feeling is not the same as agreeing with it.
There is plenty of history underneath that calm tone. Jay has kept his distance since West posted about Jay and Beyoncé’s children in 2025. West later apologized in a post he has since deleted. Even so, Jay has publicly praised West as one of the most brilliant creative minds of this generation.
What does ‘Big Brother’ still mean to fans?
Anybody raised around an older brother or cousin knows the feeling in that song. You look up to big bro. You want his approval. You also want credit for your own wins without living in his shadow. Big Brother was a tribute and a complaint in the same breath, and that tension is why it still connects with listeners nearly 19 years later.
Jay’s answer is the classic big brother response. Love you, but you do not get to call dibs on people.
The music outlived the friction, at least for a while. On New Year’s Eve 2010, Jay, West and Martin shared a stage in Las Vegas for the grand opening of The Cosmopolitan. As of Today, West had not publicly responded to Jay’s new comments, and People magazine said it had reached out to him.
