New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith is under active investigation for battery after police in Davie, Florida, reversed course on the matter within 24 hours, with detectives now handling a case that authorities had described as inactive just one day earlier.

Officers were called to Smith’s home Sunday afternoon after a woman identifying herself as his former girlfriend contacted emergency services and reported that he had assaulted her. No arrests were made at the scene. On Monday, the Davie Police Department characterized the matter as not an active case but said it was still under review. That assessment changed quickly.

A rapid reversal from law enforcement

By Tuesday morning, the police department updated its position, confirming that during the review process the case had been determined to require further investigation by detectives and had been reclassified as active. No additional details were made available, and the department indicated it could not release further information while the investigation is ongoing.

The rapid shift from closed to active in less than 24 hours suggests that material emerging during the review process prompted investigators to escalate rather than conclude the matter.

What the woman alleged and what was posted online

Audio from the 911 call, obtained by a media outlet, captured the woman describing a physical altercation and identifying Smith as the person who had assaulted her. She was audibly distressed during the call.

The woman also posted a video to social media that depicted what appeared to be an ongoing dispute at or near Smith’s property. In accompanying text she made broader claims about Smith’s behavior and his relationship with a child she described as having special needs. Those claims went significantly beyond the battery allegation itself.

On Sunday night, the mother of Smith’s young son addressed the situation publicly in a social media post, directly disputing the characterization of Smith’s parenting and describing him as more than capable of caring for his child. She asked that her son not be brought into what she called a web of dysfunction involving the other party.

The Jets’ silence and Smith’s career context

Neither Smith nor the Jets have commented publicly on the allegations. The organization’s silence is consistent with standard practice for teams navigating active legal situations involving players, but the timing is notable given that Smith was acquired by the Jets in a trade with Las Vegas this past March and was immediately named the team’s starting quarterback for 2026. He returns to the organization he spent four seasons with earlier in his career, a homecoming that had been framed as a positive story heading into the season.

The investigation does not yet involve any formal charges, and no conclusion about the incident has been reached by law enforcement. What began as a Sunday call that appeared to result in no action has now grown into a detective-level investigation with details continuing to emerge. The outcome of that process will determine what, if any, consequences follow for Smith professionally and legally.
