The Minnesota Vikings named Kyler Murray their starting quarterback on Tuesday, ending a training camp competition that was competitive on paper but had been trending toward this outcome from the moment Murray signed in March.

Coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed the decision and said Murray had shown enough command of the offense to merit the starting role. He said that despite the competition being open, he had always intended to make this call before the preseason began so the team could move forward with clarity. He will make his first appearance Saturday in the preseason opener against the New York Giants, then have a month of full practice with the starting offense before the regular season opens Sept. 13 against the Green Bay Packers.

The decision pushes J.J. McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick of the 2024 draft, to the backup role after 10 career starts and raises legitimate questions about his future with the organization. Quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer also remain on the roster.

How Murray won the job

He signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with Minnesota on March 12 after the Arizona Cardinals released him. Arizona will pay him $35.5 million, and from the moment he arrived, his resume made him the heavy favorite. He spent seven seasons with the Cardinals, who selected him No. 1 in the 2019 NFL draft. He won Rookie of the Year in his first season and made two NFC Pro Bowls, though injuries derailed two of his past three seasons before the Cardinals made a clean break this offseason under new coach Mike LaFleur.

In Minnesota, he demonstrated an understanding of the Vikings’ downfield passing offense and showed more comfort taking snaps from under center rather than in shotgun or pistol formations than he had during his time in Arizona. O’Connell called attention to Murray’s accuracy, athleticism, intelligence and work ethic as the factors behind the decision.

He did struggle in recent days, throwing two interceptions in a full-pads stadium practice Sunday night, but McCarthy was not able to capitalize during the same stretch.

He said he had not expected the job to be handed to him and that he appreciated the process.

What it means for McCarthy

McCarthy, 23, showed incremental progress this summer but could not close the gap with the veteran quarterback, whose experience and skill set overwhelmed the competition. O’Connell said he believes McCarthy still has a future with the organization and encouraged him to view his trajectory as something he controls himself.

McCarthy lost his entire rookie season to a torn meniscus in his right knee, then produced a first year as a starter that was underwhelming enough that O’Connell decided to actively recruit competition for the position. He told reporters this spring that he had thought about the situation of competing with an established veteran but had chosen to stay and compete in Minnesota. Unless the starter is injured, there is no clear path back to the starting role for him.

The Vikings fired their general manager in part because of the organization’s inability to settle the quarterback position. Minnesota has had a new starter in each of the past four seasons, cycling through Kirk Cousins, Sam Darnold, McCarthy and now Murray.

The opportunity in front of Murray

The Vikings‘ recent history with quarterbacks is relevant to how his situation is being evaluated. O’Connell coaxed career-changing seasons from Cousins in 2022 and 2023, which led to Cousins signing a four-year, $180 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons. Darnold similarly had a breakout year in 2024, signed a three-year, $100.5 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks in 2025 and won the Super Bowl last season.

If he resets his career in the same way under O’Connell’s scheme, Murray could reach free agency next spring in a strong bargaining position. The Vikings agreed to a contract clause that prohibits them from using the franchise tag to keep him in 2027, giving him an unobstructed path to the open market if he wants it.

At 29, he arrives in Minnesota with something to prove and with a coaching staff that has already demonstrated it can provide the conditions under which quarterbacks thrive.
