Grammy winning rapper Lil Durk is set to face a high profile federal trial that opens with statements on Monday in Los Angeles, in a case where prosecutors intend to use the artist’s own lyrics as evidence.

The allegations against Lil Durk

Prosecutors allege the Chicago born rapper, born Durk Banks, orchestrated a bounty on fellow musician Quando Rondo in retaliation for the 2020 loss of King Von, a member of his OTF crew who was fatally shot at an Atlanta nightclub. Authorities say the plan led to a confrontation near the Beverly Center mall in August 2022 that instead left Lul Pab, Quando Rondo’s cousin, fatally shot.

Jury selection puts rap culture on trial too

Jury selection turned, at times, into a broader conversation about how people view rap music. Potential jurors were asked whether their opinions of the genre might color how they judge the case. Some acknowledged holding negative associations with the music style, while the defense pushed back by asking whether the same level of scrutiny would apply to lyrics from other genres.

One prospective juror asked for subtitles to fully follow along with the lyrics in question, underscoring how unfamiliar terrain this can be for a courtroom. In the end, a panel of 16 jurors was seated, and the trial is expected to run three weeks or longer.

Why lyrics are central to the prosecution’s case

A key piece of the government’s strategy involves Lil Durk’s 2021 music video for Pissed Me Off, which prosecutors argue signals intent connected to avenging King Von’s loss. The tactic has reignited longstanding debate over whether creative work should be treated as literal evidence of intent, and how it might shape the way jurors interpret an artist on trial.

What the charges actually say

According to court filings, five members of Lil Durk’s circle traveled from Chicago to Los Angeles with the stated goal of targeting Quando Rondo. Investigators say at least 18 rounds were fired at Rondo’s vehicle at a gas station during the incident. Lil Durk has pleaded not guilty to multiple counts, including a charge tied to the death, conspiracy to commit a for hire plot, and a firearm related count. A conviction on all counts carries a mandatory life sentence in federal custody.

The road to trial hasn’t been smooth

The defense has lost several key pretrial battles, including a motion to dismiss the case entirely over claims that prosecutors misled the grand jury. U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald has largely ruled in the government’s favor on evidentiary disputes, denying multiple defense requests to limit what jurors will see and hear.

Adding to the drama, Lil Durk was taken into custody in October 2024 near Miami International Airport while allegedly attempting to leave the country, according to the FBI, a development that added a new layer to an already complicated legal saga.

What happens next

As opening statements begin in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom, the case is being closely watched well beyond music circles. Its outcome could shape not just Lil Durk’s career and freedom, but also the broader legal debate over how artistic expression is treated as evidence and whether rap in particular faces a different standard than other genres.

Over the next several weeks, the trial is expected to test how much weight lyrics can carry in a court of law and whether cultural bias plays a role in how jurors interpret them. For now, all eyes are on the courtroom as one of hip-hop’s biggest names fights for his freedom.
