Jack Campbell and the night in Orchard Park

Jack Campbell stood in the visitors’ locker room at the new Highmark Stadium on Thursday night and put the blame squarely on himself. The All Pro linebacker’s voice cracked as he spoke, and he refused every available excuse for a 41 to 31 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

What did Jack Campbell say after the loss?

He was direct about it. Jack Campbell praised Buffalo, said his own play was poor and repeated that accountability starts with him rather than with anyone else in the room. He said the only thing left to do is look in the mirror and improve. He pointedly declined to point at coaching, the short week or any structural problem, framing the night as a personal failure he owes to the offense and the rest of the roster.

How bad was the defensive performance?

Detroit fell behind 21 to 0 in the first half and trailed 27 to 10 at the break. Jack Campbell finished with six tackles and a quarterback hit, respectable individual production that did nothing to slow Josh Allen, who accounted for five total touchdowns. The Lions have now surrendered at least 30 points in consecutive games to open the season, dropping to 1 and 1.

What do the numbers say about Detroit?

They say the problem is not a one night aberration. This is the first time the Lions have allowed 30 or more points in each of their first two games since 2021, the opening stretch of the Dan Campbell era. Detroit has also given up 63 first downs through two games, a total tied for second most in the modern record and trailing only the 2018 Kansas City Chiefs. Stretching back to last season, the defense has allowed 30 or more points in five of its past eight regular season games.

Is anyone else speaking up?

Aidan Hutchinson was blunt about the standard not being met. The edge rusher, who logged three tackles, a sack and two quarterback hits, said change is coming even if the specifics are not yet clear. His framing was that the group cannot keep repeating the same approach and expecting different results, which is a more structural read than the one Jack Campbell offered about himself.

How did the head coach respond?

Dan Campbell was visibly frustrated heading into the locker room at halftime, expressing on live television that small errors were doing the damage. Afterward he struck a more measured tone, saying the performance was not good enough while arguing that two games have given the team a clearer picture of its own identity. He framed Buffalo as a good team playing good football and the loss as diagnostic rather than defining.

What is the injury situation?

Detroit also lost defensive back Avonte Maddox to a foot injury during the game, thinning a secondary that was already struggling to hold up. Losing depth in the back end compounds a problem that has been visible in both weeks, and it narrows the options available to a staff that has now promised adjustments.

What comes next for the Lions?

Detroit returns home to face the New York Jets, a game that offers a reset against a softer test. Jack Campbell vowed to be better in it. The larger question is whether a defense this leaky can be fixed with accountability and effort alone, or whether the changes Hutchinson hinted at need to arrive faster than a week.
