Jalen Brunson SNL hosting and the jokes he made

Jalen Brunson hosted the 52nd season premiere of Saturday Night Live, bringing four New York Knicks teammates into the audience and eventually onto the stage.

Who was there?

Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart sat in the audience and each asked a question during the monologue. Towns wanted to know whether a person can foul out of the show and seemed pleased to learn they cannot. Bridges asked about arm length and expressed regret about being unable to fly. Anunoby, who drew the loudest reception, brought up his tip in off a Brunson miss that effectively decided Game 4 of the Finals against San Antonio. Hart, who co hosts a podcast with Brunson, raised the money his teammate left on the table when he signed with the Knicks. Brunson responded by asking about an incident at last season’s NBA Cup celebration.

What else was in the monologue?

Self deprecation, mostly. Brunson joked that he would not be singing, said a prominent broadcaster and Knicks fan owed him an apology for doubting him, and referenced Madison Square Garden as the site of a widely covered summer wedding. He also promised the show would follow the pattern of his Finals performances, with three bad quarters and a strong finish.

How unusual is this?

Rare enough to be a genuine distinction. The Jalen Brunson SNL appearance makes him the first active NBA player to host since LeBron James in 2007, and the first professional athlete in the role since Travis Kelce in 2023. The complete list of NBA hosts is short. Bill Russell in 1979, Michael Jordan in 1991, Charles Barkley four times including once while active in 1993, James, and now Brunson.

Why do season premieres matter here?

Because that is the slot each of them got. Brunson, Jordan, Barkley and James all hosted premieres, which are the most watched episodes of a season and the ones booked with the biggest available name. Being offered that week is a statement about drawing power rather than about comedic ability.

Why him and why now?

Timing. He is the reigning Finals MVP coming off the franchise’s first championship in 53 years, in the largest media market in the country, and was recently cleared to play following offseason wrist surgery. That combination produces bookings, and the Jalen Brunson SNL slot arrives alongside a scheduled appearance on a network drama.

What did bringing teammates do?

Shifted the register. A host arriving alone performs. A host who turns the monologue over to four colleagues is presenting a team, which suits a player whose public image has been built around collective success rather than individual marketing. It also gave four players their own moment in front of a national audience, which the ovation for Anunoby made clear the crowd was willing to supply.

Does this signal anything?

A crossover the Knicks have not had in a while. Sustained national attention on the franchise outside the sports pages follows winning, and one television appearance is a symptom of it rather than a cause. Whether it continues depends on the season.
