Jalen Hurts and the process as designed

Jalen Hurts was removed for a concussion evaluation after a hard sideline hit in the second quarter of Philadelphia’s 27 to 7 loss in Chicago on Monday, missing a possession before being cleared to return.

What happened on the play?

Facing second and four deep in Chicago territory, Hurts scrambled right and was stepping out of bounds near the first down marker when a Bears linebacker hit him in the shoulder area, sending him to the turf. The defender was penalised for unnecessary roughness. Jalen Hurts got up and rejoined his teammates, but officials directed him off the field for evaluation.

What did that cost Philadelphia?

Points, in the immediate sense. Andy Dalton took over and threw an interception on third and goal from the 2, ending a drive that would have produced Philadelphia’s first score. Dalton said afterward that he had apologised to Hurts, acknowledging he had put both the team and his teammate in a difficult position.

How did the evaluation unfold?

Slowly from the player’s perspective. Jalen Hurts left the medical tent to watch the third down play before he had been cleared, and received clearance shortly afterward. He appeared visibly frustrated. He said later that he had felt fine, that the check had already been performed and that he was simply waiting for approval, while acknowledging he does not know the details of the process and wishing it could have moved faster.

What did the coach know?

Nothing, by his own account. Nick Sirianni said he received no information about his quarterback’s status during the sequence. He considered calling a timeout but decided against it, reasoning that he had no way of knowing when Hurts would emerge and that intervening could influence a medical decision. He said player health takes precedence.

Is that the protocol working?

Yes, and that is the point worth sitting with. A system in which a coach cannot learn when his quarterback is coming back, and cannot use a timeout to find out, is designed precisely so competitive pressure does not shape a medical judgment. The cost is real. Philadelphia lost a scoring drive to it. The alternative, in which a sideline can hurry a concussion check along, is what the protocol exists to prevent.

What about the coach’s reaction?

He regretted it. Cameras caught Sirianni shouting at the Chicago player after the hit. Afterward he said he always feels remorse when emotion gets the better of him, described the defender as trying to make a play on a close sideline situation that ended up penalised, said he does not believe anyone was trying to injure anyone, and stated plainly that he did not like how he handled it while defending the instinct to fight for his players.

What happened when Hurts returned?

He came back the following series and led an eight play, 67 yard drive ending with a touchdown as the half expired. Those were the last points Philadelphia scored.

What does it mean going forward?

Little medically, since Jalen Hurts was cleared and finished the game. The game itself is the larger concern for Philadelphia, which managed seven points against a Chicago team starting its third choice quarterback.
