Kid Cudi showed up for Kanye West at the Yeezy Season 01 runway show in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and afterward he had nothing but praise for the man he calls his big bro. Speaking to TMZ outside the show, Cudi said he loved everything about it, had been waiting a long time for another Yeezy show and admired the collection’s clear vision.
It is a sharp turnaround for a friendship that looked finished just last year. Cudi once said he was done with West, accusing him of breaking his trust and making unforgivable comments about their late friend Virgil Abloh.
How did Kid Cudi and Kanye West make up?
Slowly, and then all at once. Cudi revealed in July that the two were back in touch. Then came a public moment on stage in Chicago. Cudi later talked about that Chicago reunion on his podcast “Big Bro With Kid Cudi,” saying his whole career flashed before his eyes.
The podcast name says it all. Before the fallout, Cudi and West built one of hip-hop’s most meaningful creative bonds, including their 2018 joint album Kids See Ghosts, a project that leaned into mental health struggles at a time when few rappers talked openly about them. What happened at the Yeezy Season 01 show?
It was West’s first Yeezy runway show since 2022. The event took place at DROAM 1, his new flagship space in Los Angeles, where models walked in circles around a white sculptural mound. The collection leaned on familiar Yeezy territory, with military inspired basics, combat boots, trench coats, leather jackets and an oversized backpack.
West turned the 17 minute show into a family affair. His wife, Bianca Censori, attended, and he posed for a rare photo with all four of his children with Kim Kardashian, North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm. The show was streamed on Kick by N3on, and several unreleased tracks played during the presentation. Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Fear of God designer Jerry Lorenzo and Natalie Nunn were also there.
Why is the Yeezy comeback still controversial?
Because the past has not gone away. West’s last Yeezy show in Paris in 2022 was marred by his White Lives Matter shirt. That was followed by years of antisemitic remarks, including a song praising Hitler and a Super Bowl ad that drew viewers to a website selling shirts with swastikas. Those actions cost him his Adidas deal, his partnership with Gap and his representation at CAA.
In January, West took out an ad in The Wall Street Journal apologizing and saying he was committed to accountability and treatment. Since then, he has released his album Bully and played sold out stadiums in Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston. But the backlash continues. The U.K.’s Wireless Festival was canceled after West was blocked from entering the country, and many in the music and fashion industries remain unwilling to work with him.
