In a recent interview with Radio/TV personality Jazmyn Summers, actor Jussie Smollett discussed the crucial role Black women played in his life during challenging times. Smollett, promoting his new film “Lost Holliday,” expressed deep gratitude toward the women who supported him through his struggles following his controversial arrest in 2019.

Smollett revealed that during the tumultuous period after he was accused of staging a hate crime, it was the unwavering support from Black women that kept him going. “I would not physically be here any longer if it were not for the Black women that were pushing me and helping me and lifting me up and loving on me when the rest of the world was telling me I was absolutely unlovable,” he said. This heartfelt acknowledgment highlights the strength and resilience of Black women, who often serve as pillars of support in challenging times.

“Lost Holliday,” which hits AMC theaters this weekend, is directed by and stars both Smollett and Vivica Fox. The film tells the poignant story of a mother, Cassandra Marshall (played by Fox), who travels to Los Angeles to arrange her estranged son’s funeral, only to discover that his husband, Jason Holliday (played by Smollett), is already handling the arrangements. The film explores themes of family conflict, love and the complexities of grief.

Fox expressed her excitement about the film, saying, “Now here we are. We have a film out that I feel is going to be a classic.” The film promises to evoke a range of emotions, from laughter to tears, as it delves into the intricacies of familial relationships.

Smollett shared that the inspiration for the film stemmed from his own family experiences, particularly his mother’s journey as a Black woman marrying into a non-Black family. He reflected on the challenges she faced and how her ability to forgive and heal inspired him to mend his own relationship with his father, who passed away before they could resolve their differences.

Jabari Redd, who plays Jason Holliday, echoed Smollett’s sentiments about the film’s emotional depth, saying, “We cried all the time. But that’s the greatness of this movie. It really does take you on an emotional rollercoaster of laughter and sadness.” This blend of emotions is a hallmark of the film, making it relatable to audiences from various backgrounds.

During the interview, the trio also discussed their personal lives. Smollett revealed he is in a committed relationship and aspires to build a family. Fox humorously noted her single status, emphasizing her contentment and independence at this stage in her life.

As Smollett continues to navigate his career and personal life, he remains grateful for the support of Black women who have uplifted him during his struggles. The film “Lost Holliday” not only showcases his talent but also serves as a tribute to the resilience and strength of Black women. It is a reminder of the importance of community, love and healing in overcoming life’s challenges.

The film’s exploration of family dynamics and personal growth resonates with many viewers who have experienced similar challenges in their own lives. By tackling complex themes such as grief, forgiveness and the blending of families, “Lost Holliday” offers a nuanced portrayal of modern relationships and the obstacles they face.

Smollett’s performance in the film has been noted for its authenticity and emotional depth. Drawing from his own experiences and challenges, he brings a raw vulnerability to his character that audiences find compelling. Fox’s portrayal of a grieving mother navigating a complex family situation has also received praise for its sensitivity and realism.

The film’s production team has emphasized the importance of diverse representation both in front of and behind the camera. By showcasing Black talent in leading roles and key creative positions, “Lost Holliday” contributes to the ongoing conversation about representation in Hollywood and the need for more diverse storytelling.

Critics have praised the film’s handling of LGBTQ+ themes, noting its nuanced portrayal of same-sex relationships and the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals within family structures. This aspect of the film adds another layer of depth to its exploration of modern family dynamics.

As “Lost Holliday” hits theaters, it stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, both in its creation and its thematic content. Smollett’s journey from personal controversy to creative expression mirrors the film’s message of redemption and growth.

The film’s release marks a significant moment in Smollett’s career, offering him an opportunity to reconnect with audiences through his art. It also serves as a platform for important discussions about family, identity and the strength found in community support.

“Lost Holliday” is now playing in AMC theaters, inviting audiences to experience a story that resonates with the complexities of family and the power of love.
