Karl-Anthony Towns and what New York must decide

Contract extension talks between the New York Knicks and Karl-Anthony Towns have stalled, with an agreement considered unlikely as the defending champions open training camp next week.

What is available to him?

Up to four years and $276 million. The two sides spent considerable time on it during the offseason without reaching terms, and negotiations have not moved recently. Nothing prevents a deal later in the season, but nothing appears close.

Why would the Knicks hesitate?

Payroll structure. The owner has repeatedly stated an intention to keep the team out of the second apron, the upper tier of luxury tax penalties that restricts a team’s ability to aggregate salary in trades, use exceptions and access its own draft picks. That position has already cost New York a rotation player, with backup centre Mitchell Robinson signing in Boston this offseason. Adding maximum money for Karl-Anthony Towns on top of existing commitments makes staying below that line considerably harder.

What is his current situation?

He is owed $57 million this season and holds a $61 million player option for the 2027 to 28 season. That option is the detail that shapes everything. He is not facing free agency imminently and can decline the option later if he prefers to test the market, which reduces the urgency on his side and means the Knicks are not negotiating against a deadline either.

What has he produced?

An All Star in both his seasons in New York. Through last season’s playoffs, Karl-Anthony Towns averaged 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists on 55 percent shooting as the Knicks went 16 and 3 and beat San Antonio in five games for the franchise’s first title in 53 years. The scoring figure is modest by his career standards and reflects a role built around efficiency and rebounding rather than volume.

Does the title complicate this?

It raises the cost of everything. Winning tends to produce raises across a roster, and New York has a queue forming. Josh Hart is currently extension eligible, while Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby become eligible next offseason. A team trying to stay under the second apron cannot resolve all of those favourably, which means the order in which they are addressed is itself a decision about priorities.

Is this a sign of friction?

Not necessarily. Stalled talks in September often reflect a team preserving options rather than a player feeling undervalued, particularly when the player has a season remaining plus an option. Karl-Anthony Towns has not publicly expressed dissatisfaction, and the absence of movement is as consistent with both sides waiting as with either side objecting.

What would settle it?

Information the season provides. How the roster performs as constructed, what the tax situation looks like at the deadline and whether the front office finds salary to move all bear on what New York can offer. The same logic applies to other extension situations around the league right now, where waiting costs less than committing early.

What happens next?

Camp opens next week and the deal can be signed at any point during the season. The more meaningful checkpoint is the trade deadline, when the shape of the roster and the payroll will be clearer than it is today.
