Bazemore says athletes should wait to marry and here’s why

Kent Bazemore spent ten years in the NBA, earning nearly 78 million dollars over the course of his professional career. By most measures, that is the kind of financial foundation that should outlast retirement comfortably. But the former shooting guard is now speaking openly about how quickly that security can erode once the paychecks stop and the lawyers show up.

His recent comments about the financial consequences of his divorce have spread rapidly across social media, landing in a moment when several other high-profile athletes are navigating similar legal battles of their own.

What happened when the career ended

Bazemore retired from professional basketball in 2022. His ex-wife filed for divorce that same year, a coincidence in timing he has reflected on with visible frustration. The overlap between the end of his playing career and the beginning of his divorce proceedings led him to question whether his former partner had been waiting for the right moment to exit the marriage.

He has been candid about finding the entire experience disorienting. The lifestyle demands of a journeyman NBA player, constant relocation, extended road trips, and the pressure of maintaining a career across multiple franchises, placed ongoing strain on the relationship. His former spouse reportedly cited the desire for stability and exhaustion from frequent moves as central reasons for ending the marriage.

Breaking down what Bazemore lost

The financial settlement that followed was substantial. Bazemore paid out more than 1.5 million dollars representing his former wife’s share of their Atlanta property. She also retained ownership of their primary residence and the vehicles. During the proceedings, his former wife reportedly sought 150,000 dollars per month in child support, a figure Bazemore described as disproportionate given the significant difference in their respective incomes at the time.

His account offers a rare and direct look at what high-stakes divorce proceedings actually cost athletes beyond the headlines. He has argued that the transition out of professional sports is difficult enough on its own without the added pressure of major financial obligations in family court.

His advice to current players is straightforward. Wait until the career is over before getting married. In his view, the conditions that define an athlete’s playing years make it nearly impossible to build a stable domestic foundation, and the wealth involved makes the legal fallout severe when things fall apart.

A pattern playing out across professional sports

Bazemore’s situation is not unique. Several other athletes are dealing with similar circumstances at the same time his story is generating attention.

NFL wide receiver Tyreek Hill faced significant financial losses following a brief marriage that lasted less than two years, adding pressure during a period when he is also recovering from a serious injury as a free agent. NBA star Luka Doncic is currently facing a reported 50 million dollar settlement claim filed by his former fiancée in Slovenia, with custody arrangements also in dispute. Jimmy Butler of the Golden State Warriors has returned to court over child support, with his former partner seeking additional funds beyond an existing monthly arrangement. Former star Paul Pierce and rising player Anthony Edwards have also faced paternity and financial disputes in recent years.

The debate Bazemore started

The reaction to his remarks has not been uniform. Some observers have sympathized with his position, pointing out that the demands of a professional sports career place relationships under extraordinary stress that most partnerships simply cannot survive. Others have pushed back, arguing that both parties in a marriage bear responsibility for its outcome and that athletes are not always passive victims in these situations.

The conversation Bazemore sparked touches on something the sports world rarely discusses openly, the intersection of extreme wealth, relationship longevity, and the financial vulnerabilities that follow retirement.
