The loss comes just days after he marked a different, deeply personal milestone

Lil Nas X announced the death of his mother, Tameka Hill, in an emotional Instagram tribute posted Saturday, sharing photos spanning from his childhood to his rise to fame. The 27-year-old rapper, born Montero Hill, wrote that the loss would hurt deeply, calling his mother the best there ever was. Hill’s age and cause of death haven’t been made public, and representatives for the musician have not responded to requests for comment.

What did the tribute actually include?

Three photos accompanied the post: one of Hill looking directly at the camera, one of mother and son together at a public event, and an older photo of the two together during his childhood. The caption paired grief with celebration, framing his mother as someone whose loss will be felt deeply despite a relationship that was never simple.

Why does he describe their relationship as complicated?

Because he’s said as much himself. In a 2020 interview, Lil Nas X described his mother as someone struggling with addiction, saying the strain it placed on their relationship meant they were never especially close, even as he tried to help her get better. He said attempts at recovery didn’t work out the way he’d hoped, but added that love remained between them regardless. His father, Robert Stafford, addressed the same struggle publicly in 2021, describing Hill as someone dealing with addiction while still calling her an exceptional presence in their son’s life, and noting that no amount of money makes that kind of situation easier for a family to navigate.

Why is the timing of this loss getting extra attention?

Because it lands just days after a personal milestone he’d celebrated for himself. On Aug. 24, Lil Nas X marked his 10,000th day alive with a video showing a cake made for the occasion, joking that he’d made it further than some people manage to. The moment followed a difficult stretch that included a highly publicized 2025 arrest in Los Angeles, when he was found disoriented and partially dressed on a public street and charged with battery against a police officer and resisting arrest, charges he pleaded not guilty to. Lil Nas X was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder following that incident.

How has he been doing more recently?

By his own account, considerably better. He returned to social media in June after nearly a year away, sharing that he’d spent months in rehab focused on his mental health and had started working with both a therapist and a psychiatrist since his diagnosis. Lil Nas X said he’d known something was different about himself for years but avoided addressing it out of fear of how people might see him differently, framing his life at the intersection of being Black, gay, and bipolar as an especially difficult set of circumstances to carry publicly. Lil Nas X described feeling noticeably better since starting treatment and expressed hope for what he called his next chapter.

Has he talked about loss and grief before?

Yes, and it’s shaped how he’s processed hard news in the past. Lil Nas X’s previously described the 2018 death of his grandmother as the first time he lost someone close to him, saying the experience left him anxious and hypersensitive to his own mortality for a period afterward, before he found ways to feel more grounded again. That history offers some context for how personally significant this new loss is likely to be, arriving at a moment when he’s already been publicly rebuilding his sense of stability.

For a public figure who has spent the past year speaking candidly about mental health, addiction’s toll on his family, and his own recovery, this latest loss adds another deeply personal chapter to a story he’s chosen to share openly rather than keep private.
