The circumstances surrounding the shooting of rapper Offset at a Florida casino earlier this month are coming into sharper focus, as newly surfaced court documents allege that Lil Tjay played a direct role in instigating the confrontation that led to the incident. The documents paint a picture of a deliberate and coordinated escalation rather than a spontaneous altercation, raising the stakes of an investigation that is still ongoing.
According to a probable cause affidavit reviewed by investigators, the sequence of events began on the evening of April 6 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. At approximately 7:22 p.m., law enforcement alleges that Lil Tjay, whose legal name is Tione Jayden Merritt, directed members of his group to initiate a physical confrontation with another group of men at the venue. During the altercation that followed, one of Lil Tjay’s associates allegedly produced a firearm and discharged it, striking Offset.
What the security footage reportedly shows
Among the most significant elements cited in the court documents is surveillance footage from inside the casino that law enforcement says corroborates the timeline. Investigators allege the footage shows Lil Tjay exiting a vehicle, identifying Offset among the crowd and then leading his group toward the former Migos rapper. The confrontation escalated shortly after, culminating in the shooting.
The documents also allege that Lil Tjay filmed portions of the incident on his own phone, a detail that authorities say further establishes his presence at and engagement with the unfolding situation. If accurate, the footage from both the venue’s security system and Lil Tjay’s personal device could become central to how investigators and prosecutors reconstruct the events of that night.
Charges, release and public response
Lil Tjay was arrested at the scene and booked into the Broward County Jail on a charge of misdemeanor disorderly conduct. He was released the following day. The charge reflects the current state of the investigation rather than its endpoint — authorities have stated publicly that the search for additional individuals involved in the shooting continues, and no one has yet been formally charged in connection with the gunfire itself.
Following his release, Lil Tjay made public statements in which he denied any involvement in the shooting, distanced himself from the incident and directed pointed commentary toward Offset. The tenor of those remarks drew widespread attention online and added a layer of public conflict to what is already a serious legal matter.
Offset’s condition and recovery
Offset, born Kiari Cephus, remained hospitalized in the days following the shooting, though his injuries were described as non-life-threatening. Reports indicated he was well enough to move around with assistance during his recovery period. He has since been discharged and made his first public appearance at a concert event at the University of Arkansas, arriving on stage in a wheelchair before standing to address the crowd — a moment that generated significant attention across social media.
In the days before that appearance, he posted a personal message expressing gratitude to fans who had reached out and signaling his intention to focus on recovery and return to music. His first public performance since the shooting came roughly 48 hours after leaving the hospital.
The investigation into the broader circumstances of the shooting, including the identity of the individual who fired the weapon, remains open. Law enforcement has not ruled out additional charges and has indicated that further arrests are possible as the inquiry continues.
