Messi fell short but the tributes pouring in tell a bigger story

Messi walked off the MetLife Stadium pitch on Sunday without stopping to speak to reporters, runners-up medal around his neck, the night ending not in triumph but in the quiet weight of what might have been. It was a moment that captured everything about this chapter of Messi’s career and prompted an outpouring of gratitude from the organization that knows his contribution better than anyone.

Argentina Football Association president Claudio Tapia led the tributes following the national team’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Tapia posted a photograph of an emotional Messi standing alone on the pitch and wrote a public message describing the captain’s legacy as something beyond what any dictionary could adequately capture. He called the story eternal, thanked Messi for teaching an entire country to dream and praised his leadership both on and off the field, right to the very last second.

It was the kind of tribute reserved for a player who has given everything to a nation across the better part of two decades, and Tapia made clear that no single result could diminish what Messi has meant to Argentina.

A career defined by records and devotion

Messi became the first player in history to start three World Cup finals when he took to the field on Sunday, earning his 205th cap for the national team in the process. Messi had been central to Argentina’s run to the final, contributing eight goals and four assists across the tournament before a Spain side that allowed him no meaningful space kept him quiet throughout the decisive match.

Messi’s international goal tally now stands at 125, the second highest in the history of the game behind only Cristiano Ronaldo’s 146. He led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title against France and bracketed that achievement with consecutive Copa América championships in 2021 and 2024. The collection of honors is staggering in its breadth and the consistency with which it was assembled.

Whether Sunday’s final was his last appearance in an Argentina jersey remains an open question. Messi, 39, left the stadium without addressing the matter, and no announcement has been made about his international future.

Tapia honors the goalkeeper too

The AFA president did not limit his tributes to Messi alone. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez turned in a performance for the ages in the final, recording 11 saves against Spain, the most by any goalkeeper in a World Cup final. The heroics were not enough to prevent the defeat, but they kept Argentina competitive long into extra time and gave the rest of the squad every opportunity to find an equalizer.

Martínez had won the Golden Glove award as the best goalkeeper at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and his display in New Jersey reinforced the case for him as one of the finest shot-stoppers of his generation. Tapia’s tribute to him was effusive, describing moments of brilliance that gave an entire nation the feeling of soaring alongside him every time he made a save.

Scaloni’s future hangs in the balance

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, who has been in charge of the national team since 2018, also received warm words from Tapia following the loss. Tapia shared a photograph of the two embracing on the pitch after the final and praised Scaloni’s dedication, work ethic and love for the shirt.

Scaloni guided Argentina through one of the most successful stretches in the federation’s history, winning a World Cup and two Copa América titles across seven years in the role. His contract is set to expire at the end of 2026, and Scaloni has said he will need time to reflect on what comes next. Tapia offered no indication of what the future holds, only gratitude for everything that came before it.

The night in New Jersey did not go the way Argentina had hoped. But the words that followed made clear that the people charged with representing that blue and white shirt understand what they witnessed across this generation of players, and that the memories will not fade quickly.
