Royal Caribbean International has abruptly canceled a highly anticipated voyage aboard Anthem of the Seas, leaving thousands of travelers scrambling to adjust their vacation plans with mere hours’ notice. The ship was slated to embark from Sydney on January 27, 2026, for a scenic ten-night journey through New Zealand’s most captivating destinations.

The massive 4,202-passenger vessel, which launched in 2015, encountered technical difficulties during its previous sailing, forcing the cruise line to make the difficult decision to pull the plug on the upcoming departure. Instead of welcoming excited passengers aboard, the ship will divert to Eden, a coastal town in New South Wales, where it will undergo essential repairs under the supervision of Royal Caribbean technical teams.

Technical Troubles Derail Dream Vacation

The cruise giant informed booked passengers that the ship experienced complications requiring immediate attention, making it impossible to complete necessary maintenance work before the scheduled departure date. Royal Caribbean acknowledged the significant disruption this causes for travelers who invested considerable time and resources planning their long-awaited getaway.

The canceled voyage promised an extraordinary experience through New Zealand’s stunning landscapes, with stops planned at five distinctive ports including Picton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Passengers were particularly looking forward to the highlight of the journey, scenic cruising through the breathtaking Fjordland National Park before circling back to Sydney and returning home.

Anthem Passengers Receive Comprehensive Compensation

In response to the last-minute cancellation, Royal Caribbean has rolled out an extensive compensation package designed to ease the financial burden on affected travelers. The cruise line will provide a complete refund covering the full cruise fare along with all associated costs including taxes, fees, prepaid packages, gratuities, amenities and shore excursions purchased through the company.

Beyond the full reimbursement, disappointed cruisers will receive a 25 percent Future Cruise Credit valid for any sailing departing within the next twelve months. This gesture aims to encourage passengers to rebook and experience the vacation they were denied at a later date in the future.

Travel Expense Reimbursement Details

Understanding that cruise cancellations create cascading financial consequences, Royal Caribbean has committed to reimbursing non-refundable travel expenses that passengers incurred in preparation for their trip and related arrangements. The compensation structure covers various travel-related costs that guests cannot recover elsewhere.

For flight modifications, the cruise line will reimburse up to $200 per person for domestic flight changes and up to $400 per person for international flight adjustments. Hotel accommodations receive coverage up to $250 per stateroom for as many as two nights of lodging. Additionally, passengers can claim up to $100 per person, per day for incidental expenses accumulated during their travel disruption and unexpected delays.

Anthem Returns to Dry Dock

The vessel will proceed to Eden later this week, where technicians will assess and address the mechanical issues preventing its scheduled operation. While Royal Caribbean has not disclosed specific details about the nature of the technical problem, the decision to cancel a fully booked cruise demonstrates the severity of the situation and the importance of prioritizing safety.

The Anthem of the Seas forms a crucial component of Royal Caribbean’s winter season operations sailing from Australia, targeting travelers seeking to escape the Northern Hemisphere cold and explore the Southern Pacific’s natural wonders. This cancellation represents a significant operational setback during the company’s peak Australian deployment period and a major logistical challenge.

The cruise line expressed sincere apologies to affected passengers, recognizing the disappointment and inconvenience caused by the unexpected cancellation. As repairs commence in Eden, Royal Caribbean will work to restore the Anthem to full operational capacity and return the ship to its published schedule as quickly as possible and with renewed reliability.
