Russell Westbrook says it is over after 209 triple-doubles and an MVP

Russell Westbrook announced his retirement from professional basketball on Wednesday after 18 NBA seasons, choosing to step away on his own terms after declining opportunities with the Sacramento Kings and Washington Wizards, ending one of the most statistically dominant careers in league history.

The 37-year-old announced the retirement on social media, accompanying his post with a video of his career narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan. He described the feeling of the ending with characteristic directness, conveying that the conclusion had already happened before anyone knew it, and that it was now over.

He had been in discussions with the Kings about returning in a reduced role but chose not to accept it.

His records and his numbers

Westbrook retires holding the NBA record for most career triple-doubles with 209, surpassing Oscar Robertson’s mark of 181, a record that had stood since 1974. He also set the single-season record with 42 triple-doubles during the 2016-17 season, when he became the first player since Robertson in 1962 to average a triple-double for an entire season, putting up 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists to win the MVP award.

His career averages of 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 8.0 assists span 18 seasons and seven teams. He retires fifth on the NBA’s all-time assists list, behind John Stockton, Chris Paul, Jason Kidd and LeBron James. He is 14th in career scoring with 27,176 points. He joined James as the only two players in league history with 25,000 points and 10,000 assists, and he became the career leader in rebounds from the point guard position.

Westbrook made nine All-Star teams and was the NBA’s MVP in 2017.

The Oklahoma City years

He was selected No. 4 in the 2008 draft by the Seattle SuperSonics, but the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City before he played a game, and he spent the first and most significant 11 seasons of his career with the Thunder. He teamed with Kevin Durant and James Harden to reach the NBA Finals in 2012, where Oklahoma City lost to the Miami Heat. He scored 43 points in Game 4 of that series at 23 years old.

That core never returned to the Finals. Harden was traded before the 2012-13 season. A meniscus tear ended his 2013 playoffs. Durant’s foot fracture ended their 2015 run. The Warriors eliminated Oklahoma City in seven games in 2016 after a 73-win season, and Durant left for Golden State that summer.

He stayed, signing an extension when the organization felt most exposed and helping attract Paul George and Carmelo Anthony to Oklahoma City. He remains the Thunder’s career leader in points, assists, rebounds and steals.

The winding road from Oklahoma City

The Thunder traded him to the Houston Rockets before the 2019-20 season as part of a rebuild that eventually produced the 2025 championship. Westbrook then played for the Wizards, the Lakers, the Clippers, the Nuggets and the Kings, maintaining production deep into his mid-30s.

His final season in Sacramento included 58 starts and averages of 15.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds.

The Thunder’s general manager described Westbrook as the ultimate competitor whose belief and fearlessness helped establish the franchise from its first year in Oklahoma City and whose influence on the community continued throughout his time there.

His agent used the occasion of the retirement announcement to comment on the difficulty veteran players face finding contracts under the current collective bargaining agreement’s apron rules, noting the contrast between franchise sale prices and the reluctance to spend on experienced players who fall outside preferred salary ranges.

What the career meant

Westbrook played an unmistakable brand of basketball built around relentless aggression and elite athleticism. Detractors questioned whether his statistics translated to winning. Supporters pointed to the record books and the seasons he carried Oklahoma City after Durant left.

The 209 career triple-doubles stand alone in NBA history. No active player is close, and Westbrook’s record will stand for a long time. Nikola Jokic is second all-time at 198.
