Simone Biles spent most of this past week in bed. On Saturday, she told the world why, at least in part.

The most decorated gymnast in Olympic history posted a series of images to her Instagram Stories revealing that she had gone through a medical emergency earlier in the week, one she described as among the most frightening experiences of her life. She did not name the condition or describe what happened medically, but she made clear that the situation had been serious enough to land her in a hospital and serious enough that she felt compelled to share it publicly despite her usual preference for privacy.

She framed the disclosure simply. She does not typically open up about personal matters, she wrote, because she values keeping certain things private. This time felt different.

What Biles shared and what she kept private

The first image in her post showed her right arm bearing three hospital-issued wristbands, the kind given to patients admitted for medical care. She wrote that the emergency had occurred while her husband, Indianapolis Colts safety Jonathan Owens, was away in Indianapolis for team practice sessions. The timing left her without him nearby during what she described as one of the scariest moments of her life.

She followed the wristband photo with images of multiple floral arrangements sent by friends and family, and she expressed gratitude to the people in her inner circle who reached out, stopped by, or sent flowers during her recovery. The post concluded with a photo of her two dogs on a bed and a screenshot of a heart rate monitor, captioned with a note that she would be staying put for the time being.

She did not say what caused the emergency, and her representatives had not responded to media requests by late Saturday. She acknowledged that an explanation would come at some point, framing it as something she would share when she was ready.

A decorated career and a private personal life

At 29, Biles has built a career without parallel in her sport. She has won 11 Olympic medals, seven of them gold, and 30 World Championship medals, giving her a total of 41 medals across Olympic and world competition. That record stands as the most by any gymnast in history.

Away from competition, she and Owens have built a life together in Spring, Texas, a suburb roughly 25 miles north of Houston. The two were out together as recently as May 29, when Owens threw out the first pitch at a St. Louis Cardinals game and Biles shared photos from the outing on Instagram. Less than two weeks later, she was posting from a hospital bed.

The response from her circle

Biles made a point of acknowledging the people who showed up for her during the week, whether in person or from a distance. The bouquet photos gave some sense of the volume of support that came her way. She wrote warmly about those who checked in and visited, a small signal that despite keeping the medical details close, she was not going through it entirely alone.

Owens has not made a public statement about the situation. The Colts are currently in their offseason workout program, which requires players to be present in Indianapolis during scheduled sessions.

Biles has indicated she will share more when she feels ready. For now, she is resting.
