TLC’s Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins has stepped away from several dates on the group’s It’s Iconic tour after a sickle cell crisis sent her to the hospital, with her team confirming she is recovering and that her condition is not considered life threatening.

What actually happened

T-Boz first missed a show on August 28 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut, where bandmate Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas addressed her absence directly during an emotional moment on stage, telling the crowd T-Boz was dealing with an episode tied to her sickle cell disease and asking the audience to help carry the performance that night. Additional missed dates followed in Massachusetts and New York as Chilli continued performing the group’s catalog solo, backed by tour mates Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue.

The team’s message on her condition

A representative for TLC confirmed to USA Today that T-Boz had been hospitalized following the sickle cell crisis and was recovering and regaining her strength, explaining that the decision to continue the tour with Chilli reflected how interactive the show format is rather than any plan to cancel dates outright.

The group’s manager followed with his own statement reinforcing that her condition is not life threatening, saying her health and recovery remain the top priority and that she looks forward to returning once she is fully recovered and medically cleared to perform. Neither statement gave a specific timeline for T-Boz return, and TLC has noted separately that recovery from a sickle cell crisis can take anywhere from days to weeks depending on severity.

A lifelong battle she has never hidden

T-Boz, 56, was born with sickle cell anemia, a genetic condition that affects how red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body and can turn ordinary activity, even something as simple as climbing stairs, into a trigger for a painful crisis. She has spoken publicly about living with the disease for years, including during a 2017 television interview tied to her memoir, where she recalled being told at age seven that she would never live past 30, would be disabled for life and would never have children. She has since built a decades long career touring the world with TLC, a fact she has pointed to directly when reflecting on that early prognosis.

An outpouring of support

The news drew a wave of public well wishes from fellow artists. Jodeci member Dalvin DeGrate posted a video asking fans to pray for her recovery and strength, describing her as a close friend, and the response underneath included messages from singers including Nicci Gilbert, Ginuwine and Nivea, along with artists Vedo, Eric Bellinger and Tameka “Tiny” Harris. Fans added their own messages of support across social media as the story spread.

Why her team is using this moment to raise awareness

TLC’s statements specifically noted that September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, using the moment to encourage fans to learn more about the disease and consider donating blood if able. Sickle cell disease affects roughly 100,000 people in the United States according to the CDC, with non-Hispanic Black Americans making up more than 90% of those diagnosed, and it appears in about 1 of every 365 Black babies born in the country.

The condition causes red blood cells to take on a rigid, crescent shape that can block blood flow and starve tissue of oxygen, which is what produces the kind of acute pain crisis T-Boz experienced. There has been genuine progress on the treatment side in the past year, including a gene editing approach approved to permanently modify a patient’s own stem cells, offering a potential cure for eligible patients without requiring a matched bone marrow donor.

What happens next

The It’s Iconic tour is scheduled to continue with a stop on September 8 at Huntington Bank Pavilion in Chicago, with the run currently set to wrap on October 11 in Concord, California. Chilli is expected to keep performing in T-Boz place until her bandmate is cleared to return, with the group asking fans to keep sending patience and support in the meantime.
