Why Dillon Brooks earns a big contract after proving every doubter wrong

Dillon Brooks agreed to a three-year, $73 million contract extension with the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, keeping the forward in Phoenix through the 2029-30 season.

The deal was negotiated between the Suns’ front office and Brooks’ representation over recent weeks. The extension makes official what the organization had signaled for months, including a public statement from the team’s owner in January that Brooks was not going anywhere. When a trade was floated online, the owner responded directly to shut it down, saying the Suns were not interested and that Brooks was staying.

The 30-year-old is coming off the best individual season of his nine-year career. He averaged 20.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists as part of a Suns team that won 45 games and reached the playoffs. The team was swept in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder, but Brooks averaged 26 points in the series while shooting 43.8 percent from three, a productive postseason on a team that did not advance.

What Brooks brings to Phoenix

He arrived in Phoenix the prior offseason as part of the trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets. He has been credited with helping establish a culture in Phoenix that emphasizes defensive physicality and competitive toughness, elements that had been missing in the team’s previous era.

The defensive impact has been measurable. Phoenix’s defense improved from 27th in the league in the 2024-25 season to ninth last season, and he has been identified as the primary reason for that shift in his role as the team’s leading wing defender. Pairing those defensive results with a career offensive season made his case for an extension straightforward.

He played 56 games, missing 18 after fracturing his left hand in a February win over the Orlando Magic. He returned March 31 and was effective through the end of the regular season and the playoffs.

The Suns’ offseason commitment

Brooks’s extension is part of a broader effort by the Suns to maintain and build on the roster that produced last season’s results. In addition to locking up Brooks, the team signed several players to multiyear contracts and acquired Miles Bridges and Luke Kennard in moves that added wing depth.

The owner made clear that the team is willing to pay into the luxury tax to preserve the core. That commitment reflects confidence in the direction the franchise is heading under coach Jordan Ott and general manager Brian Gregory and a belief that continuity is the right approach for a young competitive team.

He has been a playoff participant in five of his past six seasons and has built a reputation as a defensive agitator whose competitive edge is as valuable as his scoring. He has been one of the more polarizing players in the league for years, respected and disliked in roughly equal measure by opponents who find him difficult to play against.

What comes next for Phoenix

A 45-win season that ended in a first-round sweep could be read two ways: progress for a team that had been rebuilding, or evidence that the ceiling needs to be raised. The Suns appear to have chosen the first interpretation, betting that a team that made the playoffs will make additional strides with continuity and development.

Brooks turning 31 during the contract’s run raises modest questions about his ability to maintain his defensive intensity at the same level, but the three-year length gives the Suns a reliable timeline without overcommitting to a player at the back end of his prime.

The extension is fully guaranteed, which signals how much Phoenix values what he provides and how committed the organization is to the direction he has helped set.
