Prince Harry’s latest trip to the United Kingdom did not unfold the way he or Meghan Markle had hoped.

The visit turned into a difficult ordeal because of ongoing security concerns, which ultimately forced Markle, 44, and the couple’s two children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, to cut short the time they had planned to spend in the country with Harry, 41. According to a source close to the Sussexes, Markle would have felt humiliated watching the public friction between her husband and the royal institution play out.

Below are five key developments from Harry’s week abroad.

Security concerns shaped the trip

Harry traveled to his native country for one week to mark the one year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, England. But after the Sussexes were denied taxpayer funded protection and Buckingham Palace withdrew its offer for the family to stay at a royal residence, Harry spent much of the visit without his wife and children by his side. One insider said Markle tends to let Harry take the lead when it comes to matters involving his family, while another described her as supportive of him despite the sadness surrounding how the week played out.

A rare reunion with King Charles III

Despite the complications, Markle and the couple’s children did join Harry for a reunion with King Charles III, 77, and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House last Friday. It marked the first time Charles had seen his grandchildren since 2022, when the family gathered for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. Itt was best that details of the meeting remain private, noting that family members should be given room to rebuild those ties on their own terms.

The visit highlighted ongoing institutional tension

Myers characterized the outcome of the trip as further proof of how strained Harry’s relationship with the royal institution remains. One insider suggested that resolving the security dispute once and for all would bring far more consistency to future visits, rather than uncertainty each time Harry returns to the UK.

Harry lost a high profile legal battle

The trip coincided with another setback: Harry’s loss in his $67 million legal case against a British tabloid publisher. The ruling amounted to a significant defeat for Harry. The suit, filed against Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail, centered on allegations of breach of privacy. Harry, in a statement to Page Six, described the decision as a complete and obvious whitewash.

Prince William remained absent

Even with the reunion with Charles, Harry did not see his estranged brother, Prince William, during the visit. One source described the brothers’ relationship as deeply broken, while another said there has been no meaningful movement toward reconciliation, particularly from William’s side.

Royal expert Kinsey Schofield told Page Six that William reportedly understands why Charles chose to meet with Harry, even though William likely would not have made the same decision himself. According to Schofield, William can recognize that a father managing a cancer diagnosis would want to see his son and grandchildren, while still maintaining that Harry has not yet rebuilt trust with the rest of the family.

Harry and Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020. In the years since, the couple has been open about tensions within the family, including during their 2021 sit down interview with Oprah Winfrey and their 2022 Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan. The couple has given no indication that a return to royal life is on the horizon.
