Xavier Smalls, known to audiences through his role on Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black, spent much of February navigating the consequences of a moment that was never meant to travel as far as it did. A live video he broadcast on Instagram in early February drew sharp criticism after screen recordings began circulating widely, exposing remarks many viewers found deeply offensive toward LGBTQ people.

In the video, Smalls framed his comments through a religious lens, describing various behaviors he believed to be sinful in the eyes of God and placing LGBTQ identities within that category alongside other conduct he listed including lying, drunkenness, and violence. When a viewer asked him directly whether LGBTQ people were destined for eternal punishment, he confirmed that view, grouping sexual orientation alongside what he characterized as a broader set of moral failings.

The response was swift. Clips spread rapidly across social media platforms and the backlash, fueled by both fans of the show and broader communities online, put significant pressure on the actor to respond.

An apology rooted in reflection

Smalls did not stay silent for long. In a written statement released in the weeks that followed, he described a period of genuine reflection in which he made an effort to understand how his words had landed for the people most affected by them. He acknowledged that his approach had fallen short of the compassion and humility he believes his own faith demands.

He wrote that conversations with others who offered their personal perspectives had given him insight he did not previously have, including an awareness of real harm that members of the LGBTQ community have faced as a result of homophobia. He took full responsibility for the gap between what he intended and what his words actually did, expressing regret for the pain they caused and asking for understanding in return.

A pattern the entertainment industry knows well

The episode fits a pattern that has become familiar in the social media era. A public figure makes remarks in an unscripted, informal setting, the remarks are captured and amplified far beyond the original audience, and the resulting pressure forces a public reckoning. For Smalls, the situation was compounded by the visibility that comes with being attached to a Tyler Perry production, a franchise with a broad and loyal viewership that includes significant representation from Black communities, faith communities, and LGBTQ audiences who have often found their identities overlapping across all three.

Whether the apology will be enough to repair the damage with viewers and within the industry remains to be seen. Smalls did not walk back the religious beliefs that informed his original remarks, but he did acknowledge that expressing those beliefs in the way he did caused harm that outweighed whatever point he had been trying to make.

What comes next for the actor

Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black has not issued a public statement in response to the controversy, and it is unclear whether the backlash will carry any professional consequences for Smalls. His role in the series had been building momentum ahead of the incident, and the situation now adds a layer of complication to what had been a rising profile.

For the LGBTQ community, the apology was received with a range of reactions. Some saw it as meaningful and sincere. Others felt it stopped short of a full accounting. What it did accomplish, at minimum, was to signal that Smalls understood his words had consequences and that he was willing to say so publicly.

That, for now, is where things stand.
