Zoe Saldaña is back in action as the newest chapter of Paramount+’s hit thriller series arrives this weekend, promising even more danger for her character, Joe, as she navigates threats that hit closer to home than ever before.

When the new season premieres

Season 3 of Lioness debuts Sunday, Aug. 2, exclusively on Paramount+. Viewers who want to catch up before diving into the new episodes can stream the first two seasons in full on the platform.

What the new season is about

This installment finds Joe caught between her professional duties and her personal life as mysterious threats begin closing in around her. According to the show’s official description, unexplained patterns emerge, people disappear without explanation and long established routines start to shift unpredictably. With guidance from Kaitlyn, played by Nicole Kidman, and Westfield, played by Michael Kelly, Joe must confront hidden enemies in a conflict that increasingly bleeds into every corner of her world.

The series comes from a proven creator

Lioness was created by Taylor Sheridan, the prolific writer and producer behind several other popular television dramas. His latest installment continues to blend intense action with the character driven storytelling that has become his signature across multiple hit shows.

Saldaña opens up about the show’s approach to casting

At the series New York City premiere on Wednesday, July 29, Saldaña spoke about Sheridan’s writing and his intentional approach to gender fluid casting throughout the show.

The Oscar winning actress, also known for her work in the Avatar and Star Trek franchises, explained that several of the show’s central characters were written in a way that could just as easily have been portrayed by an actor of a different gender. She pointed to her own character, Joe, as well as Kaitlyn, Westfield and another character named Kyle, noting that all could have been reimagined with a different gender in the role. Saldaña emphasized that the characters are complex enough that any performer willing to take on the challenge could succeed in bringing them to life.

A stacked ensemble returns

The new season brings back a wide roster of established cast members alongside familiar faces from the franchise. Saldaña leads the ensemble as Joe, joined by Kidman as Kaitlyn and Michael Kelly as Byron. Morgan Freeman also returns as Edwin, while Laysla De Oliveira reprises her role as Cruz.

Additional returning cast members include Dave Annable as Neal, Jill Wagner as Bobby and LaMonica Garrett as Tucker. Rounding out the ensemble are James Jordan as Two Cups, Genesis Rodriguez as Josephina, Austin Hébert as Randy, Jonah Wharton as Tex, Thad Luckinbill as Kyle, Hannah Love Lanier as Kate and Ian Bohen as Grady.

How to watch

Fans can stream Lioness season 3 starting Sunday exclusively through a Paramount+ subscription. The platform also offers access to the previous two seasons, making it easy for newcomers to catch up on Joe’s story before jumping into the latest mission.

What to expect going forward

With a returning cast of familiar names and a plot that promises to test Joe’s loyalties both at work and at home, season 3 looks to raise the stakes even further for the franchise. Between the show’s reputation for intense action sequences and its willingness to explore complex character dynamics, fans have plenty to look forward to as the new season unfolds throughout its run on Paramount+.
