A tourist bus traveling through western Mexico veered off a highway and rolled onto its side on May 1, killing at least 11 people and injuring more than 30 others in a crash that drew emergency responders from two states.  Others were injured after a tourist bus veered off a highway and overturned in western Mexico, officials confirmed.

The deadly crash occurred on May 1 near the town of Amatlán de Cañas in the state of Nayarit, where emergency responders rushed to the scene following reports of a major involving a passenger vehicle.

What happened on the highway

According to local authorities, A bus carrying passengers from Jalisco overturned near Amatlán de Cañas, leaving 11 dead and more than 30 others hospitalized, some as young as 4 years old. The bus had been traveling from Jalisco to a recreational destination in Nayarit when it lost control and overturned along the highway. The vehicle ended up on its side on a hillside, surrounded by debris and personal belongings from passengers.

Officials reported that six people were pronounced dead at the scene. Five more later died after being transported to nearby hospitals, bringing the total number of fatalities to 11.

Images captured at the scene showed the bus lying partially embedded in mud, with luggage and other items scattered across the surrounding area. Emergency tape marked off the crash site as investigators began examining the wreckage.

Victims identified and others still unknown

Authorities have begun identifying those who lost their lives in the crash, though the process remains ongoing.

Officials said efforts are continuing to confirm the identities of the remaining victims.

The Attorney General’s Office in Nayarit noted that the identification process is being handled carefully, with forensic teams assisting in verifying each individual.

Dozens injured, including children

In addition to those killed, at least 31 people sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to hospitals across the region for treatment.

Authorities said the injured victims range in age from 4 to 47, highlighting the wide mix of passengers on board at the time of the accident. Several of those hurt are believed to be residents of both Nayarit and Jalisco.

Medical teams have been working to treat the injured, though officials have not yet released detailed updates on their conditions.

Emergency response and investigation underway

Emergency personnel from both Nayarit and neighboring Jalisco responded quickly to the crash. First responders included local police, state security forces, medical teams and forensic specialists, all of whom worked together to assist victims and secure the scene.

Footage from the aftermath showed investigators closely examining the damaged bus while the area remained cordoned off. In some images, windows of the overturned vehicle appeared broken or coated in mud, reflecting the severity of the crash.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the bus to veer off the road. Investigators are expected to review multiple factors, including road conditions, vehicle status and driver related circumstances.

Community impact and ongoing efforts

The crash has left communities in both Nayarit and Jalisco mourning as families await further information about their loved ones. Officials have pledged to continue their investigation while also supporting those affected by the tragedy.

As the inquiry continues, authorities are urging patience as they work to piece together the sequence of events that led to the deadly rollover.

The serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with highway travel and the importance of ongoing safety measures for passenger transportation. The crash comes amid ongoing concerns about road safety on Mexican highways, particularly for passenger and tourist vehicles traveling between states. Overloaded or poorly maintained buses, combined with winding mountain roads, have been factors in previous fatal incidents across the country.
