Maryland residents across the state are feeling the impact of rising electricity costs as higher wholesale power prices, increased energy demand and prolonged periods of extreme heat continue driving monthly utility bills upward.
For some households, the growing expense has become more than a budgeting challenge. Once customers miss payments, overdue balances can quickly accumulate, making it even harder to regain financial stability. Community advocates say the trend is placing many families at greater risk of service interruptions while increasing stress for residents already struggling with the cost of living.
Those concerns recently took center stage with the launch of Bright Future Maryland, a coalition bringing together environmental organizations, consumer advocates and faith based groups to promote policies they believe could help lower electricity costs over the long term.
One Baltimore resident watched his balance grow dramatically
Baltimore resident Tyrone Moore said his electricity expenses became increasingly difficult to manage after he fell behind on payments.
According to Moore, what had once been a monthly bill of about $400 eventually grew into a balance of roughly $1,700, leaving him worried each day about whether his electricity service might be disconnected.
The mounting financial pressure has also affected his overall well-being. Moore said the constant uncertainty surrounding utility payments has created ongoing stress, particularly for older adults living on limited incomes who may already be coping with other financial obligations.
His experience reflects what advocates say is happening to many Maryland households as unpaid balances continue growing month after month.
Another family faced higher bills and added fees
Montgomery County resident Djamilatou Bah also described the strain caused by increasing electricity costs.
She said her monthly Pepco bill for a 1,500 square foot townhome climbed from about $558 to $627 earlier this year. After falling behind on payments, she was also required to pay a $470 security deposit, adding another unexpected expense to her household budget.
Bah said the rising costs have created ongoing financial pressure for her family and many others across Maryland who are trying to balance utility payments with other essential expenses, including groceries and housing.
Her experience mirrors concerns shared by consumer advocates who argue that many working families are struggling to keep pace with higher utility costs.
Bright Future Maryland pushes for long term solutions
The newly formed Bright Future Maryland coalition officially launched on July 8 during an event at Henderson Hopkins Partnership School.
The coalition includes organizations representing energy consumers, climate advocates and faith communities. Together, they are urging state leaders to expand access to clean energy, improve oversight of utility companies and invest in energy efficient homes that can reduce electricity consumption.
Supporters believe these efforts could help lower monthly bills while reducing Maryland’s reliance on traditional energy sources that are more vulnerable to price fluctuations.
Coalition leaders also point to growing electricity demand from large scale data centers and rising wholesale energy prices as major contributors to increasing costs throughout the state.
They argue that expanding renewable energy infrastructure and improving home efficiency would help create more stable and affordable energy prices for residents over time.
Utility costs continue drawing public attention
The debate over electricity prices comes as utility companies face increased public scrutiny.
Exelon, the parent company of both BGE and Pepco, reported approximately $2.8 billion in net income during 2025, representing an 11% increase compared with the previous year.
At the same time, BGE has proposed a rate increase that could add an estimated $8 to the average residential customer’s monthly bill beginning next year if approved.
Those developments have intensified calls from residents and advocacy groups seeking greater accountability and stronger consumer protections as electricity costs continue climbing.
Many supporters of Bright Future Maryland believe state and local officials should prioritize policies that make energy more affordable while encouraging investments in cleaner sources of electricity.
Rising costs remain a growing concern
As Maryland experiences increasing demand for electricity and ongoing pressure on wholesale energy markets, many households continue searching for ways to manage higher monthly bills.
For residents like Moore and Bah, the issue extends beyond utility payments. They say the financial strain affects everyday decisions about household budgets and long term stability.
Advocates hope lawmakers will respond with both immediate relief measures and broader investments that improve energy affordability for future generations.
As discussions continue across the state, many Maryland families are watching closely for solutions that can ease financial pressure while helping ensure reliable, affordable electricity remains within reach.
