Nolan Wells Case: Why Mississippi Autopsy Results Stay Sealed

The state autopsy is finished, but officials are staying quiet while a grand jury prepares to weigh in.

Yes. Mississippi’s state medical examiner completed the initial Nolan Wells autopsy on July 7 and finished the full report by late July, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Officials have confirmed the report exists but have not said when, or whether, it will be released to the public.

Why won’t officials release the results

Prosecutors say releasing the findings now could jeopardize the case. Jackson County’s district attorney has said the autopsy and other evidence will remain sealed until presented to a grand jury, citing ethical rules that bar investigators from sharing details that could influence witnesses or bias jurors before that process plays out.

What happens with a grand jury

A grand jury will review the state’s autopsy findings along with any additional evidence investigators submit, then decide whether the evidence supports criminal charges against anyone connected to Wells’ death. Legal experts familiar with Mississippi’s process say the panel could take months and may either agree with the official cause of death or reach a different conclusion entirely. The proceedings themselves remain confidential regardless of the outcome.

What did the family’s independent autopsy find

Unlike the state’s report, results from a second autopsy commissioned by the Wells family have already gone public. That exam, conducted July 10, could not determine a definitive cause or manner of death. The pathologist who performed it said several parts of Wells’ neck were not shipped with the body for review, some remains were likely retained by the original examiner as is standard practice, and organs already removed during the first autopsy could not be reexamined. The pathologist did flag one detail for further investigation, a patch of discoloration at the back of the skull near the occipital bone, a finding not previously visible during the first exam.

What is still missing from a full picture

Toxicology results and a clearer account of how Wells entered the water remain outstanding. Attorneys for the family have said they are working to gain access to additional physical evidence and documentation collected when Wells’ body was recovered.

How did Nolan Wells die

Wells, an 18-year-old football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College, disappeared during a July 4 boat trip to Horn Island. His body was found two days later. Investigators initially described the death as an accidental drowning, a conclusion the family has publicly questioned as they push for a fuller investigation.

Has the case drawn outside attention

Yes. The case has drawn national interest, with public figures contributing to reward funds aimed at generating new information, and prosecutors and pathologists alike have called for patience while forensic and legal processes continue. Mississippi has also faced broader scrutiny in recent years over how long autopsy reports can take to complete, though state officials say a policy requiring reports within 90 days has addressed a backlog identified in past reporting.

What happens next

The state’s findings now head toward grand jury review, a process with no fixed timeline. Until it concludes, the official cause and manner of Wells’ death will remain undisclosed, leaving the family’s own investigation as the only public accounting of what happened so far.
