Beyoncé dancer Ashley Everett clears up viral cruise moment

Ashley Everett, best known as Beyoncé’s former dance captain and a growing force in the content creator space, is setting the record straight after a birthday trip to sea turned into an unexpected viral moment  and she is not pointing fingers at the cruise line anymore.

On April 22, Everett took to Threads to walk back her earlier claims about an incident that took place aboard a Virgin Voyages ship during a birthday celebration. What had initially come across as a complaint directed at the cruise line was, after more reflection and information, something far more nuanced.

What actually happened on the ship

The incident centered on Everett being asked to step off the stage during a late-night performance of  Single Ladies at The Manor, one of the ship’s entertainment venues. The moment was filmed, spread quickly online and sparked a wide conversation about how Black creators are treated in predominantly whitecurated travel and entertainment spaces.

Virgin Voyages addressed the situation directly, explaining that Everett was not singled out. A group of guests had made their way onto the stage during a DJ set, eventually spilling into the DJ area itself. The crew stepped in to manage what had become a safety issue and asked the entire group not just Everett to return to the dance floor.

The cruise line also noted that the sailing had been deliberately curated to bring together a diverse group of creators from various backgrounds and communities. It described a firm commitment to ensuring every guest feels respected while also maintaining safety standards across all shared spaces on board.

Everett takes responsibility

After gaining more clarity on exactly what had unfolded, Everett publicly acknowledged that her initial frustration had been aimed in the wrong direction. She stated that the situation involved other guests not the Virgin Voyages team  and said she takes full responsibility for having misdirected her criticism.

She also extended a direct apology to Virgin Voyages, crediting the company for being responsive and intentional in addressing her concerns throughout the process. Rather than letting the incident overshadow the trip entirely, she made clear that her overall experience had been a genuinely positive one and that she still planned to share highlights and memories from the voyage with her followers.

A bigger conversation about inclusion

Before the clarification post, Everett had gone public with deeper concerns about the experience including feelings that Black creators were being invited to participate in brand moments without their contributions being meaningfully highlighted or celebrated. She also expressed disappointment about how her birthday was handled aboard the ship, crediting a friend for stepping in to mark the occasion when she felt the cruise line had not.

Those earlier posts were later deleted, but not before they had circulated widely and ignited a pointed conversation about representation and recognition in travel and lifestyle brand partnerships. The exchange touched on a tension that many Black creators and public figures have described in their own professional lives the feeling of being welcomed for visibility purposes while not being fully seen or valued.

Moving forward

Everett’s willingness to revisit her own narrative and publicly correct it resonated with many followers, who praised the transparency. Accountability in real time especially on social media, where first impressions tend to calcify quickly is not always easy, and many noted that her follow up post demonstrated genuine maturity.

Virgin Voyages, for its part, appears to have handled the aftermath constructively, engaging with Everett’s concerns rather than dismissing them.

The entire episode, from the stage moment to the online back-and-forth to the eventual clarity, reflects how quickly stories can spiral and how much it matters to pause before drawing conclusions both for creators with platforms and for the brands that partner with them. For Everett, the takeaway was a simple but meaningful one: reflect, correct and keep moving forward.
