Season 2 of the hit CBS legal drama Matlock has officially come to a close, and while the good news is that a third season is already confirmed, viewers hoping for a quick return will need to be patient. The Kathy Bates led series has become one of the most watched shows on broadcast television since its debut in 2024, and the network has made clear it intends to keep that momentum going even if it means holding the show back until midseason.
Here is everything to know about what is coming next for Matlock.
Season 3 is officially happening
CBS confirmed the renewal in a press release issued in January 2026, giving fans an early reason to celebrate before the season 2 finale had even aired. The two hour season 2 finale broadcast on April 23, wrapping up a run that began in October 2025.
The renewal was hardly a surprise. When Matlock premiered in 2024, many expected a straightforward remake of the classic legal drama that originally starred Andy Griffith. Creator and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman had other ideas. Her reimagining built in a major twist around the true identity of Bates character, Madeline Matty Matlock, and her hidden reasons for joining the Jacobson Moore law firm. That creative gamble paid off, turning the show into one of broadcast TV’s biggest hits.
The Wellbrexa case is closing and season 3 is a fresh start
While the full plot of season 3 has not been revealed, one significant chapter is closing. The Wellbrexa opioid storyline, the central mystery that drove Matty to the law firm at the very start of the series, is reaching its conclusion at the end of season 2.
Co-star Skye P. Marshall told Parade in April 2026 that the finale delivers real resolution, promising unexpected developments and major revelations about who is and is not connected to the case. She described season 3 as a brand new chapter for the show and its characters suggesting a meaningful creative reset after two seasons of building toward this payoff.
Which cast members are expected back
No official cast list for season 3 has been confirmed yet, but Bates and Marshall are both expected to return as the show’s anchors. The broader ensemble includes Jason Ritter, Leah Lewis, Aaron D. Harris, Sam Anderson and Beau Bridges.
One notable addition from season 2 is also expected to carry over: Edwin Hodge, Marshall’s real life husband, appeared this past season as Langston Wright and is reportedly set to return, according to Parade.
Why the wait for new episodes will be longer than usual
Here is the part fans may find frustrating. Despite being a certified hit, Matlock will not return as part of CBS’s fall 2026 lineup. In April 2026, the network announced its schedule for the 2026-2027 television year, revealing that both Matlock and the comedy Ghosts are being shifted to a midseason slot.
CBS entertainment president Amy Reisenbach framed the move as a reflection of the network’s confidence in both shows, noting that being able to hold a proven hit for midseason speaks to the overall strength of the fall schedule.
But the delay is not purely a network decision. Urman herself requested additional time to develop the new season. The showrunner explained to TV Insider that closing out the Wellbrexa storyline in the two hour finale required such a thorough resolution of major threads that she needed extra runway to properly build the foundation for what comes next. She described the process as constructing the architecture of future seasons thoughtfully rather than rushing into production.
The creative patience behind that decision is part of what has made Matlock one of the more carefully crafted broadcast dramas in recent years and if season 2 is any indication, the wait is likely to be worth it.
