Daylight saving time kicks off Sunday and the debate over ending it has never been louder

Clocks across most of the United States will spring forward one hour early Sunday morning, marking the start of daylight saving time and the annual ritual that millions of Americans have come to either tolerate or openly resent. For residents of at least one part of North America, however, this weekend’s change will be the last one they ever have to make.

The debate over whether the country should continue switching between standard time and daylight saving time twice a year has persisted for decades without resolution. In 2026, that conversation is moving in new directions, with a Canadian province taking permanent action and fresh federal proposals circulating in Washington.

Daylight saving time ends permanently in British Columbia

When clocks move forward Sunday, British Columbia will be participating in the ritual for the final time. The Canadian province has officially adopted a policy of staying on daylight saving time year-round, eliminating the back-and-forth that has long frustrated residents across North America.

Provincial officials cited a range of practical benefits, including reduced disruptions to family schedules, simplified coordination across time zones, and an additional hour of evening light during the darker winter months. The decision followed a public survey in which an overwhelming majority of residents expressed support for ending the twice-yearly switch, giving lawmakers a clear mandate to act.

British Columbia will join Saskatchewan as the only provinces in Canada that do not observe the clock change, a distinction that previously set Saskatchewan apart from its neighbors but will now be shared by a significantly more populated part of the country.

Daylight saving time proposals are moving through the United States Congress

In Washington, the conversation is active but unresolved. Two separate pieces of legislation are currently in play, each offering a different approach to ending the clock change at the federal level.

One proposal, introduced in the House of Representatives in early February, would split the difference between the two existing time systems by permanently shifting clocks forward 30 minutes. The idea is to land on a middle ground that captures some of the benefits of both standard time and daylight saving time without fully committing to either. The bill has not yet been scheduled for a vote.

A second proposal would make daylight saving time the permanent year-round standard, eliminating the fall-back entirely. This approach has been introduced before in various forms and has attracted support from lawmakers across party lines, but like its counterpart, it has not cleared both chambers and reached the president’s desk. Any permanent change to how the country keeps time would require passage in both the House and the Senate before becoming law.

Daylight saving time brings a useful reminder for households everywhere

Beyond the clock change itself, the start of daylight saving time has become a widely recognized prompt for a handful of routine household tasks that are easy to forget during the busyness of daily life.

Ceiling fans can be reversed as warmer weather begins to build through spring, helping to circulate cool air more effectively. Smoke detector batteries are worth replacing now, a reminder that has been tied to the clock change for years precisely because it tends to be one of the few times people think to check. Air filters in heating systems deserve attention after running through a full winter season, particularly in homes with pets. And with severe weather season approaching, restocking an emergency kit with fresh supplies is a practical step that pairs well with the seasonal transition.

Sunday’s clock change may feel like a minor inconvenience. But with British Columbia stepping off the clock-change carousel for good and federal lawmakers actively debating the issue, the twice-yearly tradition that has defined American timekeeping for generations is facing the most serious challenge it has seen in years.
