Roger Federer makes his long-awaited return to the US Open this August

The tennis legend heads back to Arthur Ashe Stadium for a star-studded exhibition alongside Andy Roddick, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi, just days before his Hall of Fame induction.

The moment New York tennis fans have been waiting for

Nearly six years after his last appearance at the US Open, Roger Federer is coming back to New York. The Swiss tennis icon will take the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Aug. 25 for a special exhibition event, announced this week by the United States Tennis Association. The occasion carries a title befitting the man himself, billing the evening as a homecoming for one of the sport’s most celebrated figures.

Federer will be joined by a group of fellow legends whose careers overlapped with his own dominant era. Andy Roddick, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi are all set to participate, making the event a reunion of some of the most recognizable names the sport has ever produced. Additional participants are expected to be announced as the date approaches.

A tournament he made his own

The US Open holds a particular place in Federer’s legacy that no other Grand Slam can quite replicate. He is the only player in the history of the tournament to win five consecutive titles, a run that stretched from 2004 through 2008 and established him as the defining player of his generation. That stretch of dominance came immediately after Roddick claimed the 2003 title, the last American man to win the event before Federer took over the draw entirely.

Those five championships were part of an overall haul of 20 Grand Slam singles titles, a number that stood as the all-time record for years and that Federer accumulated across all four major tournaments. But it was the specific energy of New York, the electric nights under the lights at Flushing Meadows, that seemed to bring something extra out of his game year after year.

Federer reflects on what New York means

Federer has spoken warmly about his connection to the tournament and the city in the years since his retirement. He has described Arthur Ashe Stadium as a place of deep personal significance, a venue where some of the defining moments of his professional life unfolded in front of roaring crowds. His last competitive appearance there came in 2019, when the tournament felt like a possible farewell even before anyone knew for certain that retirement was drawing near.

He officially announced his retirement from professional tennis in September 2022, closing a chapter that had stretched across more than two decades at the highest level of the sport.

A Hall of Fame week to remember

The timing of the exhibition adds another layer of meaning to the visit. Just days after taking the court in New York on Aug. 25, Federer will travel to Newport, Rhode Island, where his formal induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame is scheduled for Aug. 29. The two events together make for a week that will feel like a sustained celebration of everything he contributed to the game.

For fans who packed Arthur Ashe Stadium during his years of dominance, or who simply grew up watching him redefine what was possible with a tennis racket in hand, the return is something close to a gift. The USTA has promised more details in the weeks ahead, but the announcement alone was enough to spark a wave of anticipation across the tennis world.

New York has always had a special relationship with its sporting legends. On Aug. 25, one of the greatest the game has ever seen is walking back through the door.
