Summer always seems to disappear in a blink, and suddenly it’s Labor Day weekend and pumpkin spice season is looming. If your social feed is flooded with friends showing off elaborate getaways while you’re still deciding what to do, there’s no reason to feel behind. Plenty of cities across the country are hosting free or low cost events through Monday, September 7, making it easy to turn a stay at home weekend into something memorable.

Here’s a look at seven major U.S. cities offering budget friendly ways to celebrate the final weekend of summer 2026.

Atlanta goes all out for a milestone Pride celebration

Atlanta Black Pride is marking its 20th anniversary this year, with programming running September 2 through 7. The organization behind the celebration works year round to support and uplift Black LGBTQ+ individuals and families through health, economic and social justice initiatives. This weekend’s festivities include the free Pure Heat Community Festival at Piedmont Park, along with daytime gatherings and an All White Party on Labor Day itself.

Charlotte’s Uptown comes alive with music and community resources

The Charlotte Soul Fest returns September 5 in the city’s Uptown district, blending live music, dance and art with practical community offerings. Attendees can expect performances on a main stage, interactive dance sessions, a wellness village, resources on housing and financial literacy, a market spotlighting young entrepreneurs, and food trucks representing some of the city’s local favorites.

Chicago pairs jazz with African arts and culture

Music lovers in Chicago have two major draws this weekend. The Chicago Jazz Festival brings free performances from local, national and international artists across multiple neighborhoods, celebrating one of the city’s signature art forms. Running alongside it, the African Festival of the Arts highlights African diasporic culture through live shows, workshops and family friendly activities.

Houston offers a packed schedule of no cost entertainment

Houston has an especially full lineup for the holiday weekend. Eleanor Tinsley Park is hosting a free outdoor festival with vendors, food and family activities running daily through Sunday. The city’s long-running First Saturday Arts Market is also worth a visit for anyone looking to browse paintings, photography and handmade jewelry from local artists. Additionally, the interactive Horizon art installation at 1001 Avenida de las Americas is in its final weekend on display, giving visitors a last chance to see it before it moves on.

Los Angeles blends art, theater and beach festivities

Angelenos have several free options to choose from this weekend. The Broad Museum continues to offer complimentary general admission, including a reinstallation of more than 30 works from its vault, among them pieces by Jean-Michel Basquiat. The Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival is wrapping up its season, offering a final chance to catch outdoor theater under the stars. Meanwhile, Fiesta Hermosa runs through Monday in downtown Hermosa Beach, featuring a maker’s market, live music and coastal views, all free to attend.

The Bay Area rounds out summer with swimming and stand up comedy

In the Bay Area, McNears Beach Park Pool in San Rafael is hosting its final open day of the season on Monday, offering free swimming and beach access. Comedy fans can check out free shows with RSVP at The Function in downtown San Francisco running Friday through Monday, or head to Oakland for a POC Comedy Night at Mesa Maguey on Sunday and Monday. The Kings Mountain Art Fair in Redwood City also offers free admission daily from September 5 through 7.

New York City’s Caribbean Carnival returns with star power

Brooklyn is preparing for one of its largest cultural celebrations of the year as the New York Caribbean Carnival returns Monday. Reggae and dancehall performer and soca artist  have been named honorary grand marshals for the 59th annual event, which culminates in a parade along Eastern Parkway starting at 11 a.m. Smaller gatherings featuring food and music continue throughout the weekend leading up to the main event.

Whether celebrating solo, with a partner, friends or family, there’s no shortage of ways to close out summer without spending a fortune. A little research and maybe a full tank of gas for a short road trip is all it takes to turn this Labor Day weekend into one worth remembering.
