Taraji P. Henson calls out celebrities flocking to the Jeff Bezos backed Met Gala

While the 2026 Met Gala drew some of the biggest names in entertainment, not everyone was celebrating. Taraji P. Henson made her feelings known publicly, expressing deep confusion over fellow celebrities who chose to attend the high-profile event given its sponsorship ties to Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos.

Henson’s comments came in response to a video circulating on social media in which influencer and commentator Meredith Lynch raised pointed concerns about the event’s honorary co-chairs. Lynch argued that Bezos, through his public support of Donald Trump’s presidency, had contributed to a political climate that has led to significant cuts in arts funding, making his sponsorship of a major arts institution all the more contradictory. Lynch stopped short of condemning the Metropolitan Museum of Art itself, acknowledging it as a respected New York City institution that channels gala proceeds toward meaningful causes. Her issue, she made clear, was with who was writing the checks.

Henson amplified the message by resharing content that highlighted the contrast between Bezos’s reported ownership of a $500 million superyacht and working conditions faced by Amazon warehouse employees, which critics have long described as physically demanding, poorly compensated, and prone to high injury rates. Her caption was brief and pointed.

Hollywood showed up anyway despite Henson’s warning

The controversy did little to thin out the guest list. Monday night’s gala drew an impressive turnout that included Rihanna, Beyoncé, Anne Hathaway, Margot Robbie, Bad Bunny, Teyana Taylor, Colman Domingo, and Connor Storrie, among others. Beyoncé served as a co-chair of the event alongside Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and longtime Gala fixture Anna Wintour.

The evening’s theme, “Fashion is Art,” was tied directly to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Art exhibition, grounding the spectacle in the museum’s broader cultural mission even as the politics surrounding it drew scrutiny.

A wider conversation about celebrity and accountability

The pushback from Henson and Lynch reflects a tension that has been building in celebrity culture for several years now. At a moment when public figures have increasingly used their platforms to signal political and social values, the decision to attend or skip a high-profile event can carry as much weight as any formal statement.

For some, the Met Gala remains an unmatched celebration of fashion, art, and philanthropy that transcends the politics of any single sponsor. For others, the presence of Bezos as a financial backer made attendance feel incompatible with the values many of those same celebrities have publicly claimed to hold.

Henson did not attend the gala. Her commentary, sparse as it was in word count, landed loudly. And in a cultural moment where the line between a party and a political statement grows thinner by the season, it is a conversation that is unlikely to fade with the last camera flash of the night.
