What sparked JFK’s worst flight delay day this summer?

Storms, flooding and staffing shortages combined to snarl travel across the region.

Severe thunderstorms combined with air traffic controller staffing shortages to cause more than 1,900 flight delays and 652 cancellations across U.S. airports on Friday, with New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport hit hardest. JFK alone recorded 119 delays and 162 cancellations, according to flight tracker FlightAware, while JetBlue led all carriers nationwide with 106 delays and 145 cancellations.

Nearly every flight scheduled to arrive at or depart from LaGuardia, JFK and Newark airports Friday evening faced cancellation or hours long delays as New York City’s Emergency Management Department warned of flash flooding through 9 p.m.

What caused the delays, weather or staffing

Both. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the disruptions stemmed from a combination of dangerous storms and controllers calling out sick at multiple facilities in the New York region. Duffy said on social media that when an estimated 40% to 60% of controllers call out sick at several facilities at once, the Federal Aviation Administration has to slow down flights to keep the airspace safe. That staffing gap compounded delays that were already building as storms rolled through the region.

How severe was the weather in New York

Heavy rain and lightning moved into the five boroughs shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, part of a system expected to drop 1 to 1.5 inches of rain on the city. Wind gusts reached 60 mph, with forecasters warning of penny sized hail and flooding on highways and city streets. Because of the high winds, the city temporarily barred empty tractor trailers and several other trailer types from crossing the Marine Parkway Bridge over Rockaway Inlet Friday night. Officials also urged residents to stay out of flooded basements, including basement level apartments, as water rose in low lying areas.

Did the heat make things worse

Yes. The storms arrived as a tropical air mass pushed the heat index in New York City to nearly 100 degrees, prompting a separate warning from the city’s health department. Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin said heat related emergencies remain the top environmental danger New Yorkers face, noting that more than 500 New Yorkers die from heat related illness every year. The combination of extreme heat followed by sudden severe storms created hazardous conditions both outdoors and in the air.

How are travelers responding

Frustration spread quickly on social media as passengers described cascading disruptions. One traveler said their flight into New York was canceled, so they rerouted to Philadelphia only to have that flight delayed as well, leaving them stuck at the airport for roughly eight hours. Stories like that were common Friday night as airlines scrambled to rebook passengers onto a shrinking number of available flights.

What should travelers expect going forward

Duffy’s warning suggested the disruptions could extend beyond Friday, since controller staffing shortages do not resolve overnight and the same storm system continued moving through the broader Northeast. Passengers flying in or out of the region in the days following the storm should check flight status directly with their airline before heading to the airport, since delays tied to staffing shortages can persist even after weather clears.
