The Dallas Wings and Atlanta Dream meet for the second time this season Friday night at Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and the game airs nationally on ION. Fans without cable can stream the matchup on Fubo or DIRECTV, both of which offer free trials for new subscribers.

Dallas enters the game at 3-2 after winning back-to-back contests, while Atlanta sits at 2-1 and has yet to win a game at home this season. Every game the Dream have played has been decided by five points or fewer, which makes their home court record a meaningful storyline heading into tonight.

What happened in the first meeting

Atlanta won the opener 77-72 on the road in Dallas, getting significant contributions from Angel Reese, who posted 12 points and 16 rebounds for her 51st career double-double, and Allisha Gray, who combined with Jordin Canada for 45 points. Rhyne Howard added 14 points in what turned into a strong second-half performance for the Dream.

Dallas held its own despite shooting just 38% from the field and 15% from three, numbers well below what the Wings are capable of. Paige Bueckers, Arike Ogunbowale, and Jessica Shepard combined for 47 points in a losing effort. A five-point road loss while shooting that poorly suggests the Wings have more to offer in the rematch.

Dallas arrives riding momentum

Bueckers has been playing at a different level since that first Atlanta meeting. She dropped 24 points on 11-for-19 shooting in Wednesday’s road win over the Chicago Sky, continuing a stretch that has her shooting 57.6% from the field and 57.9% from three on the young season. Those numbers place her among the most efficient offensive players in the league regardless of position.

Ogunbowale contributed 23 points in the same Chicago win, giving Dallas a legitimate two-scorer combination that can sustain an offense even when one of them has a quiet night. Shepard added a triple-double with 18 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds, showing depth beyond the two stars. Dallas holds a net rating of plus-6.8, which is better than Atlanta’s plus-1.6 despite the Dream carrying a better record.

Azzi Fudd also contributed 12 points off the bench in the Chicago win, providing additional scoring depth that was not as visible in the early weeks of the season.

What Atlanta brings to the rematch

The Dream have been without Rhyne Howard for stretches this season, limiting their perimeter depth on both ends of the floor. Brionna Jones is listed as out with a knee injury and will not play Friday. Despite those absences, Atlanta has competed in every game and enters the rematch having nearly completed a 19-point comeback against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in their most recent outing before tonight.

Gray remains the team’s primary offensive option and will likely face increased defensive attention from Dallas wings after her first-meeting performance. Te-Hina Paopao has also emerged as a consistent secondary scorer, putting up 19 points in the near-comeback against Las Vegas. The Dream’s league-leading defensive rating makes them difficult to score against regardless of the opponent.

Why this game carries weight beyond two teams

Bueckers and Reese are both rookies generating substantial attention in the league’s early weeks, and their teams meeting twice in the first month of the season has accelerated what could become one of the WNBA’s more compelling ongoing matchups. Bueckers was held below her scoring average in the first meeting. Tonight is the earliest opportunity she gets to flip that result.

Atlanta needs its first home win. Dallas needs a road statement to back up its recent momentum. Both things give the game stakes that extend past the standings.
