When High Potential star Javicia Leslie and Nana-Yaw Asamoah decided to get married, they did not simply plan a wedding they designed an experience. The actress, 38, and her now husband, 43, said their vows on April 18 at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba, a luxury beachfront resort nestled along the Caribbean coast of Riviera Maya, Mexico. Around 150 guests made the trip to witness the multi-day celebration, which was as intentional and heartfelt as the love story behind it.
The couple’s path to the altar began at a karaoke bar in Los Angeles, where a mutual friend introduced them knowing both were serious about finding a lasting relationship. After nearly a year together, Asamoah proposed on May 25, 2025, at a winery in Napa Valley in what Leslie described as an intimate and perfectly thoughtful moment. Less than a year later, they were exchanging vows oceanside in Mexico.

3 days of festivities, 1 unforgettable weekend
The celebration kicked off Thursday with a rehearsal dinner before expanding into a full Friday lineup. The groom spent the afternoon on the golf course while the bride hosted a poolside party, and both groups came together that evening for a lively Afrobeats welcome party that set an energetic, joyful tone for the weekend ahead.
Saturday’s ceremony was the emotional heart of the event. Faith was woven into every part of the service, with gospel music and moments of prayer guiding guests through what the couple described as a deeply spiritual experience. The ceremony closed with a prayer circle, where parents and the wedding party gathered around the newlyweds, arms linked, and prayed over their marriage a moment that reportedly moved many guests to tears.
A live quartet provided the processional soundtrack, performing two songs that reflected the couple’s distinct personalities. Leslie walked down the aisle to John Legend’s So High, while Asamoah’s entrance was marked by UGK and Outkast’s Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You). The couple exchanged personal vows before being officially married by Asamoah’s sister, Afia Reed.

Leslie arrived at the ceremony in a gown by Pallas Couture a timeless, classic design featuring a beautifully cinched waist and a full, dramatic flare. But the fashion moments did not stop there. For the reception, she changed into a second look with a sleek, fitted silhouette described as elegant, modern and sculpted. A third outfit a fun, flirty two piece set by Galia Lahav rounded out the evening and kept the energy going well into the night.
The reception unfolded under a star lit sky on the beach, decorated in an elevated neutral palette of champagnes, tans, beiges, bronzes and golds. Guests dined on salmon, slow-cooked short rib and pumpkin risotto, with churros served in place of a traditional wedding cake as a nod to Mexican culture and the destination itself.
A first dance with a Batwoman twist
DJ Casanova kept the dance floor alive throughout the night, but it was the couple’s first dance that left the most lasting impression. As Leslie and Asamoah swayed to Lauryn Hill‘s Nothing Even Matters, a bat reportedly circled above them on the dance floor a moment that felt almost too perfectly scripted for the Batwoman alum. The playful coincidence drew cheers and laughter from guests and became one of the most talked-about moments of the night.
Wedding planner Diann Valentine guided the couple through every stage of the planning process, bringing a sense of ease and calm to what could easily have been an overwhelming undertaking.
Honeymoon plans and what comes next
The newlyweds head to South Africa and Mauritius for their honeymoon, with an itinerary that reads more like a bucket list adventure than a typical post wedding getaway. Their plans include four days in Cape Town exploring culture, art and cuisine, a stay at a working winery in Franschhoek, a three day safari in Kruger National Park and a final stretch of oceanside relaxation in Mauritius.
Looking further ahead, Leslie says the couple hopes to start a family and continue building what they call a lasting legacy together grounded in love, purpose and a shared appetite for discovering the world.
