Porter Airlines flight PD444 cancelled over toddler seatbelt standoff

A Porter Airlines flight from Victoria, British Columbia to Toronto was cancelled Thursday, Aug. 6 after a young child refused to stay buckled during taxi, forcing the crew to return to the terminal and triggering a chain of delays that pushed the departure past the airport’s overnight runway curfew. Porter Airlines confirmed the cancellation of flight PD444 was a direct result of the seatbelt standoff, saying the aircraft could not safely take off while the child remained standing and unbuckled in their seat.

The Porter Airlines flight had already left the gate at Victoria International Airport and was heading toward the runway when crew members noticed the toddler standing rather than seated. Both the child’s parent and cabin crew attempted to secure the seatbelt but were unsuccessful. The aircraft turned back to the terminal, where the family was asked to deplane along with their baggage.

Why did the Porter Airlines flight get cancelled instead of just delayed

Timing. After returning to the terminal, The Airlines staff had to bridge the aircraft, remove the family and their bags, refile flight plans and complete the associated paperwork. By the time all of that was done, the clock had passed 12:30 a.m. local time, which is when Victoria International Airport’s runway closes for the night. Once the Porter Airlines flight missed that curfew there was no path to a same night departure, and the cancellation became official.

Porter Airlines apologized to the remaining passengers and confirmed the rebooked flight departed the following evening on Friday, Aug. 7. According to FlightAware data, that flight left Victoria at 10:49 p.m. local time and landed in Toronto at 6:16 a.m. the next morning. The family involved has not been publicly identified.

What are the rules for children on Porter Airlines flights

Porter Airlines requires an approved child safety seat or restraint device for any infant under 2 years old who occupies their own seat. Transport Canada strongly recommends using an approved child restraint throughout all phases of flight, saying it offers the best protection against unexpected turbulence. Porter Airlines does not supply car seats or any other restraint systems, meaning families who want to use one must purchase a separate ticket for the child and bring their own approved device on board.

Canadian aviation safety rules treat an unsecured passenger, regardless of age, as a condition that prevents takeoff. That is why the Porter Airlines crew had no option other than to return to the gate once it became clear the child would not stay seated and buckled.

Is this kind of Porter Airlines cancellation unusual

Incidents involving unruly or non-compliant passengers have drawn increasing media attention across the airline industry in recent years, but cancellations triggered specifically by a child’s seatbelt refusal are rare. Most passenger related disruptions that lead to cancellations involve adult behavior. What makes the Porter Airlines flight PD444 case notable is that the safety concern itself was resolved quickly enough, returning to the gate took only minutes, but the downstream paperwork consumed enough time to blow past the airport’s hard curfew, turning a manageable delay into an overnight cancellation for everyone on board.

Porter Airlines has not indicated whether the family faced any additional consequences beyond being rebooked on the next available flight.
