Prince Jackson marked what would have been his father Michael Jackson’s 68th birthday with a special Las Vegas celebration, joining fans and performers for an evening dedicated to the King of Pop’s enduring musical legacy.

Prince, 29, attended Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, the Cirque du Soleil production built around Michael’s music, choreography and visual style.

The annual celebration brought together Michael Jackson fans and members of the show’s cast for an occasion centered on the singer’s extensive catalog and continued influence.

For Prince, the gathering offered another opportunity to see his father’s work connect with audiences, including people who were introduced to the music years after Michael’s passing in 2009.

1. Prince continues to celebrate his father’s musical legacy

Michael Jackson remains one of the most recognizable figures in popular music, with songs and performances that have continued to find audiences across generations.

Prince has increasingly become part of that legacy himself, appearing at events connected to his father’s work and participating in projects that keep Michael’s story in the public conversation.

His appearance at Michael Jackson ONE came just months after the release of Michael, the biographical film about his father.

The movie stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew and Prince’s cousin, in the title role. The casting gave the Jackson family a particularly personal connection to the project, with Jaafar taking on the challenge of portraying one of the most recognizable performers in music history.

Prince was involved with the film as a producer and has previously discussed the experience of watching Jaafar transform into Michael for the production.

2. Jaafar’s portrayal brought back familiar memories

Prince previously reflected on the emotional experience of seeing Jaafar in costume and makeup for the first time.

The resemblance was particularly meaningful because Jaafar was portraying a close family member whose image had been familiar to Prince throughout his childhood.

The moment also illustrated the unique position Prince has held throughout the making of the film. He was not simply watching an actor take on a famous musical figure. He was watching his cousin portray his father.

The film also features Colman Domingo as Joseph Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson and Juliano Krue Valdi as a younger Michael.

For the Jackson family, the project offered an opportunity to introduce Michael’s story and music to audiences who may not have experienced the height of his career firsthand.

Prince has previously expressed strong support for Jaafar’s performance, describing the portrayal as exceeding the family’s expectations.

3. A new generation continues discovering Michael’s music

The Las Vegas celebration comes at a time when interest in Michael’s music continues to extend beyond the audiences who experienced his career in real time.

That generational connection is especially significant for Prince, who was only 12 when his father passed away.

Now an adult, Prince has been able to look at Michael’s career from both a family perspective and through the eyes of someone involved in preserving his father’s artistic legacy.

The continued interest in Michael’s music also demonstrates the staying power of the catalog he created. Songs such as “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” “Thriller” and “Man in the Mirror” remain familiar to audiences around the world, while his signature dance moves and stage performances continue to influence entertainers.

At the Las Vegas celebration, Prince was surrounded by fans who came together to recognize that legacy.

His presence also provided a connection between Michael’s family and the people who continue to support his music.

Prince is helping carry the legacy forward

Michael was a father of three children. Along with Prince, he welcomed daughter Paris Jackson and son Bigi Jackson.

Each of his children has developed a public identity of their own, while also remaining connected to their father’s enormous place in music history.

For Prince, that connection has included involvement with the Michael biopic and appearances at events honoring his father.

The Las Vegas celebration offered another reminder that Michael’s influence remains part of popular culture more than a decade after his passing.

For the younger generation discovering his work today, the music can feel like a new introduction to an artist whose influence shaped pop culture for decades.

For Prince, those discoveries appear to carry an even deeper meaning.

As he continues participating in projects connected to his father, he is helping introduce Michael’s artistry to audiences who may know the music without having experienced the era in which it was created.

The Aug. 29 celebration ultimately brought those generations together in one place, with Prince joining longtime admirers and newer fans to recognize what would have been Michael Jackson’s 68th birthday.
