A Southwest Airlines flight traveling from Nashville to Fort Lauderdale was diverted to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport late Friday after a possible security threat prompted the crew to reroute the aircraft and alert authorities on the ground.

Southwest Airlines Flight 2094 landed safely in Atlanta at approximately 9:06 p.m. A passenger was subsequently removed from the plane by the Atlanta Police Department. The remaining passengers boarded a replacement aircraft and continued to Fort Lauderdale, arriving just before 3:30 a.m.

What Southwest said about the security matter

The airline confirmed the diversion in a statement Friday night, saying the flight landed at Hartsfield-Jackson to respond to a possible security matter. Southwest praised its flight crew for their handling of the situation and apologized to customers for the significant delay. The airline said it had reached out individually to affected passengers.

Atlanta police confirmed that officers assisted federal partners with the incident at the airport but offered no additional details about the nature of the threat or the identity of the passenger taken into custody.

What remains unclear after the diversion

Several questions remained unanswered as of this morning. Authorities had not confirmed what the passenger did or said that triggered the security response, whether any dangerous items were found aboard the aircraft, or whether the individual removed from the flight would face charges. The Atlanta Police Department had not responded to requests for further comment.

Southwest did not identify the passenger or provide specifics about what the crew observed prior to diverting. Federal authorities had not issued a public statement by this morning.

Flight diversions tied to passenger behavior or security concerns have become more common across U.S. carriers in recent years, with crews trained to err on the side of caution when any threat to passenger safety arises. In this case, the decision to land in Atlanta rather than continue to Florida added several hours to the journey for everyone on board, though all passengers ultimately reached their destination.

The Federal Aviation Administration and Transportation Security Administration had not released statements regarding the incident as of Saturday morning.
