WestJet Flight Attendants Strike: Why Flights Are Canceled This Weekend

Canada's second largest airline and its cabin crew union hit a breaking point this weekend.

WestJet flight attendants walked off the job early Today because months of negotiations over wages and unpaid ground work collapsed without a deal, triggering hundreds of flight cancellations during one of Canada’s busiest travel weekends.

What triggered the walkout

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents roughly 4,400 WestJet flight attendants, issued a strike notice after nearly eleven months of bargaining failed to produce an agreement both sides could accept. WestJet responded with its own lockout notice, and once the notice period expired early Sunday, the strike began.

What is the strike actually about

At its core, the dispute centers on how flight attendants get paid. Crews are generally compensated only while a plane is in the air, which means time spent boarding passengers, running safety checks and managing delays on the ground goes unpaid. As delays have become more routine across the industry, that gap has turned into a major point of contention. Union leadership has framed the fight as a push to have that ground work formally recognized and compensated, not just wages in isolation.

Is WestJet still flying

Not on its full schedule. The airline began an organized wind down of operations days before the strike started, pulling planes from routes to keep them positioned and secured in case a work stoppage hit. By Saturday morning, 86 flights had already been canceled, and that number grew once the walkout actually began Today. WestJet’s busiest corridors run domestically, including Vancouver to Calgary and Calgary to Toronto, though flights to the United States, Europe and Asia were affected as well.

How many passengers are impacted

During peak travel periods, WestJet typically carries up to 70,000 passengers a day, and the strike lands squarely in the middle of a long weekend observed across most of the country. That timing has amplified the disruption, leaving travelers scrambling to rebook or find alternate carriers on short notice.

What has WestJet said about the offer on the table

WestJet has described its latest proposal as designed to be an industry leading agreement addressing the union’s key priorities. The airline has also characterized its cancellations as a precautionary step meant to protect aircraft and avoid stranding passengers, rather than a sign that talks had broken down for good.

Is the government getting involved

Ottawa has stayed engaged without stepping directly into the dispute. Federal mediators have supported negotiations since May, and Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu has said both sides are working hard to renew their labor agreement, expressing confidence a deal remains possible.

What labor experts are saying

Analysts who study airline labor disputes see this as part of a broader shift. Flight attendants across the industry have grown increasingly vocal about unpaid ground duties, arguing it no longer makes sense to treat boarding and delay management as free labor. Aviation experts have also noted that early cancellations, while disruptive, are a standard way for airlines to protect their fleets once a strike becomes likely.

What should travelers do now

Anyone with an upcoming WestJet booking should check the airline’s website directly, since schedules are changing quickly. Both WestJet and the union say they remain willing to negotiate, but until a new contract is reached, further cancellations are likely.
